Is Zwift worth the money?

You can opt for a cheap turbo and then buy sensors that will provide Zwift with your power and speed/cadence in the app, but it's far more enjoyable with a smart trainer and I'd say it's worth the extra outlay if your budget can stretch that far.





You don't need a lot of gear to get started with Zwift. Aside from your subscription to Zwift itself, all you need is a simple turbo trainer, speed sensor, and then just your smartphone to use Zwift on - however, you could invest in amazing equipment to enhance your experience. Wahoo kindly gave us their full Kickr reins so we have an interactive smart trainer, fan, and climb that changes like you're outside. - Yes.

The question, however, is what actually is the difference in experience between these two setups? We thought it was time we did the two head-to-head calculations to find out. (upbeat hip-hop music) We'll start with our entry-level setup. We got ourselves a simple wheel-on resistance trainer.

It actually has a magnetic resistance unit that can be manually adjusted using this lever. Anyone who has been bicycling for a long time will be familiar with this type of turbo, because, frankly, that's what all turbo trainers used to be like. And because of this, you can get them now relatively cheaply.



So a great introduction to the world of indoor training I mentioned at the beginning that you need a speed sensor. What is important, however, is that it is a speed sensor that connects to the device on which you will be using it. If you have a speed sensor that sends for ANT +, chances are I need an adapter to pick up the signal from your computer or laptop or whatever.

In this case, it also transmits via bluetooth, which means that I can pick it up directly from my smartphone, which I will be using in this case. Remember to attach this speed sensor to your rear wheel because that is of course the only one that turns. You then pair it with your device, where it can tell Zwift how fast the rear wheel is spinning.

The smart thing is if you also tell Zwift which trainer you are using because they have calculated how much drag each trainer creates. This means that if he knows how fast the rear wheel is turning, he can calculate how much power you are using for it. (Joy Techno Music) - So here we have the Wahoo Kickr, the Kickr Climb, and the Kickr Headwind.



The Wahoo Kickr is their top smart turbo trainer, and the obvious difference from this one and the one Si has used before is that my bike doesn't have a rear wheel directly driven turbo that comes complete with its own cassette. That said, you no longer use your own rear wheel and you won't end up with those black marks all over the wall. But inside is the real difference.

The Turbo has a variable resistance unit and a power meter, which means that it both accurately calculates my power and adjusts the resistance I feel in the pedals depending on where I'm riding on the Zwift. This means that going uphill will actually feel like going uphill and you will have to change gears accordingly. First of all, and what we have here is the Wahoo Kickr Climb.

This automatically simulates the incline and mimics what's going on on Zwift. Up to 20% incline and 10% incline. And finally we have the Kickr Headwind, and this is a fan that connects to your turbo trainer or heart rate monitor and adjusts the cooling based on the intensity of your riding.



You can of course override this and just crank this up to the max. - Chris, should we Zwift? - Let's do it. - Before we start, apologize, buddy, for making yourself go into the entry-level setup.

It just so happens that we don't have the necessary adapters for this trainer so that I can mount my different bike on it. So you just have to tell me everything, buddy - I'm not sure if that was the most sincere excuse, but let's move on. - Okay, let's go. No change in resistance when riding uphill or downhill. And that's based on the calculations Zwift made based on my own skills. In practice it means that if, for example, the interval is 350 watts, as long as I turn the pedals, this trainer would generate this resistance. That means that I will deliver 350 watts, no matter how fast or slow I pedal.

However, for me, it's probably the improvement in the driving experience that is most notable. The feedback you get from the trainer depends on what is happening on the screen. So when I start climbing I'll feel the resistance, which means I have to change gears, and then with this front Kickr climb, the incline of my bike changes, which means my body position changes too.

While I'm not literally fighting gravity now, it kind of feels like the opposite is the case as I go downhill, the resistance subsides and off we go. Well I think it's fair to say that using a smart trainer can definitely improve your workout, just like if you had a power meter on your bike, because you can really dig deep and make sure the workout, that you do is absolutely optimal. And then the other thing aside from training, if you're just a huge fan of riding Zwift, the community, the social element then having this setup will make the experience better for you.

But the good news is that either way, of course, it's not strictly necessary. However, what I would do if I would try to carry over from this to the basic setup is first some kind of cooling you down. So you'll be riding hot inside, and so any old fan is better than nothing.

Although of course, the better the fan, the better your cooling will be. The other thing is that the smartphone Chris is using is incredibly handy, especially if you are traveling around, you will find that using a bigger screen will make you more connected. So a tablet, or in this case, an Apple TV connected to a huge screen, and I actually feel very connected to my virtual world.

And the good thing about it is it then leaves your phone free for the companion app. (upbeate techno music) - It's been a long time since I use Zwifton a perfectly normal indoor turbo trainer like this one, and it's kind of weird not feeling the climb or feeling the slipstream like others? walk past me but if I had never experienced that I wouldn't know I missed anything - No, but since you've gone from being a normal trainer to being an intelligent trainer, how did it feel to you, this step close? - Well I really enjoyed it because I don't always do a training session so when I logged in I just wanted to do a ride or go hard every now and then, kind of like a matter of style, and feel like the climb meets you instead of having to switch gears to change the intensity I really enjoyed it yeah i think that's the thing, with the extra investment of these interactive trainers you get the element that is more realistic to and it also breaks up an otherwise fairly linear experience of having to react, as you say my bike just angles there when the incline begins.

You have to react to what's happening on the road, so it breaks things, you shift gears, you have to pick up your cadence, get used to those resistance shifts, and it feels a lot like riding outside. However, I think the strength of the basic setup is that you still have most of the elements of Zwift available so that you have all of the workouts - yes - and you will feel perfectly normal. They have full control over them and you have the social elements too, so we kind of ride together, right? - Yes, and I-- - Though I think I dropped you - Uh, a bit on the turbo trainer's incline so that I know how hard I try.- Yes.

Is it right? - Yeah, probably. It's actually not that far away - yes, let's go. (upbeate techno music) To wrap up this article we should mention one thing above all, and that is that we have trainers on the completely different end of the spectrum here.

And it's not an either-or situation because there are those in the middle, is it? So you can get simpler interactive trainers that don't cost that much money, but that still gives you the interactive feel you get from Zwift. Is Zwift worth it without a smart trainer?

For best experience, a smart trainer is recommended for Zwift. However, if you only have a classic trainer, then getting a power meter or a speed and cadence sensor for your bike will make it possible for you to enjoy Zwift.

If smashing it against riders from across the world in cycling races is your thing and data is everything, then pick Zwift. But if you have a holistic vision of fitness and want to practice yoga, develop a regular stretching routine and you grow best from human guidance, Peloton is the unmistakable choice.

I was looking for a good solution to drive indoors in winter, it is important that the solution is quiet as I live in a Japanese apartment; solution that was super quiet and I didn't have all the money in all of these new ones great smart trainers that are out there and that's why I kind of got the idea to use a spinbike because spinbikes are super quiet and don't use electricity, so those are two great points right there but when I went to the First time looking for this topic there wasn't a lot of information about spinning wheels and Swift so I had kind of swam in unfamiliar territory but I'm happy to announce that this solution was perfect for me worked and may work for you too Go into what it takes, what we need to do get this setup working so the first thing you need is, of course, an aspin bike and it doesn't matter what spin -Bike you have. Most of them are pretty similar and have a lot of the same parts you can have a low end bike can have a medium end or you can have a high end model.

It doesn't matter what I have, it has no electronics, it just has a simple flywheel, but one advantage of my Spinbike is that it has unique handlebars so you have normal drop bars, you have the triathlon handlebars and I chose these on purpose because I didn't want any of those extra devices I don't need a speedometer because we connect this to Swift with a power meter, so when when you connect the Swift you need either of two things a power meter or a speed sensor, with the speed sensor being the fallback option of course if you don't have a power meter, everything on Swift is power based so you really don't want to be quick with a speed sensor so you won't be able to get an exact picture of how you do in the race and so it is better to use some kind of power meter and as far as I know there are currently between ei different types of power meters you can hook up to a spinbike I use a pedal-based power meter so I have the five aero-osteoma power pedals that I made a review article for earlier. So if you're interested, check out these awesome, you can use them for almost a full month with the decent amount of rides and I don't really have to top them up. I just calibrate them every now and then and you can just turn them off and put them on the other bike so when I want to ride my racing bike outside, now it's winter so I don't write my racing bike outside a lot, it's mainly mountain bike so there are no issues there but switching to other bikes is super easy, no hassle so love the pedal based power meter solutions the other that can theoretically work but I don't know anyone who has done it is you crank toggle and use a crank based drive solution of them should be compatible with some of the crank arm solutions but just save yourself the hassle and go with the pedal based solution.

I recommend the Fabri Osteoma pedals anyway this is all you need to get the whips so yeah it's really that simple, all you need is the power meter in the bike you just plug in your computer like normal and for I just made another big purchase I was looking for some sort of stand or table that would allow me to shut down my computer in front of me while I was driving In the end, the 300 dropped, it's actually three hundred and fifty dollars here in Japan on the Wahoo -High desk and it was pretty expensive but I'm so glad I made this purchase, I use this thing for everything g I use it to stand and work when I'm not on my bike and I can quickly switch to the bike when I need to use it there. So love-love-love this desk I wish there were more slightly cheaper alternatives, but that doesn't seem like there really is a lot on the market at the moment, so yes to go into the benefits of this setup is one of the main advantages of the Using a spin bike with Swift only means that you have a special bike for your indoor riding for anyone who has experience with some kind of mechanical pretty much every cyclist has experienced it no it's not fun to deal with and if something happens to your bike , breaks a chain even if some parts in your gear stick don't work and you may not be able to use that until your bike shop gets it fixed for you, so the advantage of aspin bike is that these things never break, it doesn't matter if your main bike breaks, you always have this bike to rely on, so for me these are just big points The big things that I am in This year I'm trying to stay motivated, drive more consistently and just have fewer excuses and if I don't have to worry about mechanical problems then that's just one less excuse and I can be more consistent with my training. Another perk I mentioned earlier is of course the silence these things are super quiet when you don't know that the spin bike setup is just a rotating flywheel and you put some kind of soft feather pillow on it so that it can next to no sound at all, no sound from the drive chain or the internal parts are so super quiet just from the contact of the spring to the flywheel Another advantage of the Spinbike is that there is pretty much no maximum resistance so some of these smart dealers have some of those other trainers out there have maximum resistance that you can output that doesn't matter to most people as most people can't put out more than a thousand or 1500 watts, but if you can then a spinning wheel is pretty great because you give up before the spin bike gives up if that makes sense another big advantage of the spin bike is the adaptability so i live with me ner wife my wife also likes to ride a bike and if she wants to use the bike we can simply adjust the position we just have to turn it up to bring the saddle up or down.

You can't get 100 percent exactly in the same position as your main bike, but you can get it pretty close and it's comfortable enough for me, but if you are really accurate? Things that could be detrimental to you as the adjustment points are spaced apart so you may not be able to get to the exact location you are looking for. This is a good point to go into the downsides as we're already talking about that one downside of having your own bike in your house or home is that it takes up space. I live in a tiny apartment in Japan and the space is pretty limited and i have no idea how i managed to convince my wife convince to give me that special place in our living room for the spinning wheel but luckily she liked it herself and she saw the value in it but not everyone will be able to get his wife or partner to have a bike of their own in his life space so this may not work for everyone and the allure of having a trainer and putting him in the closet and just pulling it out when you need it and pulling your bike out when you need it could be better for you The other downside of the spin bike is it really? hard so it's hard to move, hopefully you don't have to move this thing I don't really plan to move this thing until we move here maybe because I have no other place I can place it so that there isn't a Problem is once you got it set up Speaking of the setup, the setup wasn't that bad, it maybe took us about 30 minutes.

So if you are worried about having all of those electrical outlets, then you have to worry about plugging in your laptop, plugging in some other tech that you use to plug in your fan, you might run out of electrical outlets, the great thing on that thing is that it doesn't need electricity and it doesn't generate additional heat.

One thing about biking and swift in summer and winter you overheat like crazy if you bicycling indoors so we really don't want to add more heat to our environment where we recycle. The good thing about the spinning wheel is that these things don't generate any heat, it's just the flywheel and the cushion so there aren't any issues The downside of the spin bike is the drag style as this is a flywheel if the drag is low, stick to it Your legs moving and they don't really stop so if you've written a track or velodr before before it's a pretty similar feeling to where your pedals are more connected to the bike itself, it's not 100% the same, but it's pretty similar. So when you turn with little resistance it feels great and a good pedal stroke forces you to move quickly.

The downside of this comes when you start using high resistance. So when I start cranking that thing down towards the end of a sprint in Arace and Swift I feel like I'm releasing the pedal a bit in just a short amount of time it stops the flywheel and it really hurts, it doesn't seem to feel quite the same its that you have when you are on the road, when you stop driving on the road, when you let up for a second you can just start pedaling again and it's not a problem but once you have that braking resistance when You stop pedaling for a second it will stop and you have to start over with a fully resilient pad on that flywheel and let me tell you that after that you don't come back in terms of sprint workouts like this it's really hard you you're just kind of one and done, when you're done with your sprint there is no going back from it you have to be a bit quick to react and that's the other disadvantage of switching n with the road bike you can change your gears with your gear lever with the smart trainers they have the automatic resistance for the terrain you are on and unfortunately with the spinning wheel you have to do it manually it is really easy, though it's usually just a small rotary knob so just turn it left or right depending on where you're going. Usually when I ride Swift when I see myself climbing a hill just add more resistance it only takes a second and you're done when I go downhill I'll just reduce the resistance there a little of course again that has advantages and cons, if you're retraining for more time trial stuff f or flats and you want to have a consistent performance profile, you don't really need that mode in these smart trainers and can just do a consistent performance without worrying about those virtual climbs and yourself Focusing more on achieving your specific workout when you have a target workout trying to maintain 300 watts for 5 10 minutes, or whatever it's much easier with this type of setup, you can get exactly the performance that you want You need to block it and not worry about those hills based on different position of course s where you use different muscles so when you climb your position changes, the load on your muscles changes a little, that's why these new ones like the Wahoo so called kicker stalls up front are so popular where you can angle your bike change and use those different muscles which will train you better to mountaineering if that's your goal unfortunately you are limited I'll do that with the spinning wheel unless you just stick blocks into the front of your bike and just ride the entire ride like an uphill position, but you can't change it while you're riding, so yeah, this is pretty new technology though so we really don't have to think about it, that you're not going to over-think that you did with my spinbike I swapped out some of the parts, so I've put on my own ridden build saddle here so that most of these parts are fairly compatible l are you can change your pedals to your liking, you can change the saddle to your liking, and you can even swap out the handlebars on some setups, but that depends on the overall spinbike you're getting into.

I'm very happy with this setup I can't ask for more it was super cheap the bike itself was around $ 400 I had the power meter pedal so I didn't really have to spend anything extra on it and then my regular Swift account was like that Much cheaper than spending on one of these new smart power meter trainers. I'm still very excited about this technology, but I want to wait a little bit more money and I want to wait a bit for the technology to get a bit more advanced so let's spin with no resistance. Does Zwift make you a better cyclist?

Having said that if it is a choice of a Zwift ride or doing nothing then it's definitely better than not riding. Zwift racing is very good fun, and a long endurance ride is much better if you have a virtual world.

Tomorrow, Trainiacs, maybe not tropical yet. We have snow, snow, snow, snow, snow, more snow. But that's the bottom, and that means it's almost outdoor riding season, and that means I have to make a decision about how often I bike indoors and stick with my newfound fifth love, Zwift.

No triathlon Kim, Gracie, Peaty. Triathlon. Zwift that go through my head while I hit (loud clink) and decide how often I stay inside.

That was more difficult than I intended. Okay, I'm back and me I'm a real (bang) boy again. So, let's talk about power numbers first.

Power The numbers that drive outside will always be higher than the power numbers that drive inside. That's because you grunt and moan a lot more outside, and you move sideways, you have wind on your face, and that lack of air movement that raises your skin temperature so you can try your way a lot harder, hence the KPIs in the Outdoors higher than the indoor COPs. So let's talk about the quality of the training.

The quality of the training inside will be better than the quality of the training outside. Outside you have traffic, street lights, flat tires, things like that to deal with. On Zwift, on TrainerRoad, on indoor cycling, everything is prepared for you and you can set a six minute interval and it will take 360 ​​seconds.

It's not that you get stopped early or have some inconvenience along the way that messes up the exact intent of the workout. That's why you have to say to people like Lionel Sanders, 'You know what, I only train indoors.' And he has a lot of other reasons for that, but there's a really big group of triathletes out there who say, 'You know what, it's just so much more' purposeful to ride indoors' so they're all going to do their rides indoors .

Well, as far as convenience goes, indoor cycling is obviously the winner here. You can have a setup without moving the bike. You can even keep your diet handy for days.

You hardly have to wear any clothes anymore. You don't have to dress appropriately for the weather and I've never seen a roadside driver change a flat tire on Zwift. Very convenient, time-saving to drive indoors.

Now as for the racing simulation, if you are on your way to a course, knowing the altitude of the course will be difficult to train wherever you are, indoor riding can make up for that. Well, for example, if I had a Wahoo Kickrback when I was training for Austen, I could have uploaded the Austenrace course to the trainer, and suddenly all that bump on the course that everyone found challenging was something that I would have been prepared. Combine that with the Wahoo Climb, which hopefully will someday come out and my body will adjust to that racetrack exactly.

The same can't be said for riding out in the prairies of Manitoba, where it's just pancake flat. There is now a lack of indoor riding compared to outdoor riding. Your body has to adapt to the bumps in the road, the little micro-vibrations, the little micro-changes that you go through when the wind changes direction.

All of these things take a lot of work at the core, a lot of work in the stabilizer muscles. Your body needs to develop the ability to absorb those small movements and twists that come up through the wheels and frame of your bike. I won't be prepared for that.

Lionel Sanders himself actually said that when he runs, he specifically makes sure that he comes out and runs outside so his body is strong enough to handle this racing experience because it went through it in training, I wonder why he did that Doesn't ride a bike? Does that mean? I'm going to drive inside and say, 'Hey guys, the outdoor drive group is not going to take place.' No, not very much. Part of my motivation for training really hard in the summer is being outside and socializing with people is a big tick for outdoor riding that can't satisfy here in the pain cavity, plus the intensity you get outside helps can achieve, very much on race day.

So this is probably not my first time being one hundred percent outside. I'll still be doing some workouts that should be really targeted indoors on Zwift, but the majority of my rides will be outdoors. Well, let's use this window of time to show you something inside that I've never shown you before.

Okay, you've seen a lot up here, but what you haven't seen much is the basement. So down here this is a renovation that I did and started the day after we moved in in 2014 and I built it as you can see it has a full kitchen full here and here we have one full bedroom, and we're actually renting this place out so I can buy more bike parts. Let me show you around So we are completely separated and the only thing we share is the laundry room, when you come in you have a nice, large, open area that I completely gutted and transformed into this when I moved in.

So we have a living room there, a nice Ikea kitchen here. We have a bit of storage space. We have a three-part bathtub.

Toilet, sink, cupboard, standing shower. When you go back to the bedroom, the bedroom is huge when I built and framed it, then I went and stood in here and I thought, 'Holy smoke, I really built this place over.' That was unexpected.

So after renting it out to the same person for three years who was amazing, she moved out a few days ago, moved back in with her parents and we have a new tenant in about three days. So we have to clean it up a bit and have enough money again to buy more bike parts. So it's kind of interesting isn't it? Funny story from back here, towards the toilet.

We are flooded once. Plumber came up and said, 'Mm, that really wasn't going to happen anymore.' One such option is RGT Cycling, which is a Zwift-like platform. RGT is free but they also have a paid subscription that offers more features. RGT is similar to Zwift in that there is a screen app for riding and a mobile app for pretty much everything else. Open up both and activate the screen app from the mobile app.
