Specialized australia - the ultimate guide
Is specialized overpriced?
Specialized offers some of the most expensive bikes on the market. While they do go on sale on occasion, even their sale price is going to be more expensive than 99% of bikes from competing manufacturers. Some people say yes, other people believe that the price of these bikes is more than justified.
welcome to the gcn tech show with mealex and olliewelcome you said thank you i'm looking forward to this one alexwait wait wait who comes later for the robbery that comes later this week we have hot technology including the lightest saddle in the world your equip the bike safe and ours most important topic of conversation why are some bicycles so expensive, well, they'll put the lid back on later that was the first time since you did the tech show with me and i haven't done the tech show for a long time, so i am I'm so excited to get off to a good start, we're starting the last few weeks' poll so let's do it well, let's get the results, so last week we asked what people think of the Spicoaero breakaway bars and what do the youth think of Alex holds. Well it's not about me, it's about the viewers I'm honest, I was expecting this result, yeah, I'm not surprised to be honest and I agree and I don't want to see too many people on them, because i think it would be harmful in the corners, not great, but on to the main discussion point, why some bikes are so expensive, now i know this is a really broad question but there are many different areas that we are discussing can, isn't daalexyeah that's right and over the years we've seen that bicycles have become a lot of high-tech and with them the prices? We are going to start with research and development companies and manufacturers are putting a lot of time and effort into research to make hyperbikes high performing bikes, and it's not just luck that they just show up and They're just the top, the fastest, and the lightest. It takes a good long time, it can take years, and it can take a long time for manufacturers to cover these costs.
Yes, and one thing to note is that all of this technology can and will sink into the cheaper areas, but it won't take you a while, but don't be shocked by these kind of expensive bikes because like we said, this technology will eventually tri climb down and it will work for everyone and over the years we've made some different articles comparing old top end group sets to the cheaper but new group sets and you know what the cheaper new group sets are almost every time We're going to the next topic, yes, material cost now a lot of consumers are going to think that the material is most of the cost and although these high tech materials are quite expensive, they cover it not the bulk of the cost, right? No, and the labor is actually one of the biggest costs to consider because high-end carbon bicycles, the intricate design of which requires a lot of human labor to make and they can't just be automated with machines, so it is just an expensive process to get all these people to make them the more complicated the bikes the more time consuming it is probably the next topic is free market, right because there is a market for it if people don't buy these expensive bikes then there would be none Market, so the manufacturers or dealers would have to cut those costs to get the sale, but we as consumers buy these bikes so well that they resell them that they keep selling them at a premium for the shop that sells it because you do were there and used their services so that they had to make a profit from it, otherwise the shop just wouldn't exist and you can I Don't buy your bike and that's why some direct brands can undercut shops that sell bikes because they don't have that middleman who makes that little bit of money. Exactly that's a fair point and we love keeping bike shops close by, we don't think about branding prestige either, that's a high value now for every manufacturer out there, it's the brand, the look and the feel, it is the name on the bike that can also withstand a lot of weight, isn't it like that when you buy a bike you also buy the name of that bike? so marketing is a pretty expensive area, brands invest heavily in their marketing and keep their brands kind of prestigious and desirable to people, yeah i think it's time we look at some numbers, yeah we do , I actually did some quick calculations for this, so I'm going to need my laptop here. I have an Alex Soso.
I have included some basic numbers here for the cost of a ten thousand pound bike, so it's a hyper bike and you know what I've broken down when you factor in the approximate cost of maintenance over a four year period I'm looking at almost 25 pence a mile which is more than I thought it is quite a lot. I mean, I've been pretty generous with some of the numbers, but it gives you a bit of baseball numbers, so if you did a 100 mile drive, yeah how much would? That costs me, it could possibly cost you £ 25 but then we looked at the positives Alex yeah, you know £ 25, it's cheaper than a bus ride, you even look at a cab which is way cheaper than a cab ? and it's fun, it's fun, it's fun, it's your hobby so i think the value isn't a business investment it's a business investment but it's fun all terrain scout gear and this is a series of collaborations between the Service Cores and other brands and they are bringing out a brand new gravel shoe which is pretty cool and it has a unique color and the materials are made with reflective pigments Safety first I love these, they look absolutely amazing off, don't! They look like you just stepped in a bit of mud and you left that green layer of mud on the bottom of your shoe, why it's green, it's not on the shoe they look cool but yeah they keep going despite them also come up with Hit Pack which is hand made and really easy to access to stow all your integrals so that you have your snacks. So if you want to access your snacks while driving, you can do that on the back of your hip and they also say that they are much more comfortable than backpacks you know why alex is good as I understand it is that when you have a backpack on used a bike, it's very top-heavy, so it can be quite uncomfortable to ride back and forth, so the hip bag is much more comfortable when you're riding on uneven terrain, but if you go on from that back of your hip, got man atg clothes, this is the tech clothes they bring out in 2021 I'm really excited to see this but next you drove to work and left you know what i need to bring my coffee with meno oh okay if you've ever thought we had a bike cup holder and that goes as well as any handlebar you can take your coffee with you but a bike cup holder S You'll need a sealed lid because it just clips onto the handlebars.
It has a little claw inside to keep your cup from falling out, but what? If you drive over a pothole or a speed bump or suddenly break you have to be a bit careful, I may have to try one I have to try somewhere there is a gcn tech challenge, how much coffee can you keep in it? Your cupon on the way to work and be the fastest Maybe there will be penalties for too much coffee-Ollie has no chance He doesn't have far to ride even if it's not true, he could be dropped Next is the seller italia c59saddle, who claims to be the lightest saddle in the world. Sits amazingly at 61 grams, it actually looks pretty cool, but do you know what the weight of 61 grams is? Alex No, come on, I did a little research on this and it's a razor that can weigh 61 grams, but more importantly, a full-size egg weighs 60 grams that you wouldn't want to sit on eggway would you no it is a a bit fragile it is not the saddle but a good idea and you know why that sounds so easy no well it is because it is made of carbon fiber carbon fiber rail carbon fiber r base and the padding good there is nothing new, there is no padding no padding at all and that's why is it so easy i have to say i need a saddle with matewell padding i am quite fascinated and actually ordered one, so i am fascinated by how it looks oh the lightest saddle in the world maybe then you ollie will fall when you climb actually no you do this regularly that's the next bit of hot tech what is the inflatable saddle cover oh that looks cool looks really very comfortable I could use one, why is it on our list, it did include it well because it just looks a bit bizarre, it's not how it works then Alex, well it's interesting that you asked that because I was a got bit of a quote from their website and it says it uses the 3d airbag design with one? Gas bag internal air circulation to distribute the hip pressure effective shock buffer hip and the aftershock excellent permeability It's the best partner of the driver mewas you only think a little, but how much is it raised on Kickstarteruh? Is specialized a good bike brand?
Generally, Specialized are a reputable brand who produce high quality bikes, however there are one or two points to bear in mind if you're thinking of splashing out on one. Like most top bike manufacturers they produce a very expensive top end range, where you can expect to get an awful lot of bike for your money.
Let's talk about the Specialized Comp 29 Rockhopper, sales skyrocketed around the world with bike shops, no bikes were sold out in the spring and that doesn't always happen, so it was one of those weird things that everyone decided we were stuck locally and we said we're going to spend about $ 1,000 on these bikes. What does that bring us? So after doing my research, $ 1,000 Canadian will get you a hardtail suspension bike, and if you can find something that has double suspension it probably won't be the best.
You will be sacrificing in many other areas for that price. You don't have to spend a lot of money for a beginner I'm not entirely sure what it's called on this bike, but it only has the one gear in the front, you have the full nine in the back, so it's a 9-speed bike and in In comparison, it's certainly a lot more common, and maybe not as much nowadays, but for me as a kid it was more common to have multiple gears in front and multiple gears in the back to get 27 combinations, for example, when mountain biking three gears up front You don't necessarily need 27 different options, but what matters to me is that when you're riding a trail very fast, your brain is doing so many different things. Gear is one less thing that your brain thinks about all the time on the trail must, and I think only your right hand is in charge of switching seems so small, but it's actually quite a big thing that you don't have to think about, your left hand is your left hand Your front brake and that's all you use for it.
For example, here's your right hand, you have your rear brake and then you have your gearshift and this is your only gearshift on the whole bike so that's nice, you have your trigger finger to downshift and your thumb to upshift for driving to facilitate. Another thing that is pretty cool is the shifting system comes with a micro-shifting system and the gentleman in the store explained that to me this is set up on the Specialized Comp 29, not only does it shift gears for you, the back part of it actually keeps your chain in in a line and in some ways parallel to some other bikes, when you shift gears it will affect the angle at which the chain goes from front to rear gear and that can put strain on your chain and, in high tension situations, actually add to it cause your chain to break. I really like these tires, the back and the front are two different treads o they are made specifically for the back with more traction the front with stopping traction One cool thing to keep in mind with the shock absorbers is that you actually lock them When you're trying to go up a big hill or maintain more speed, the front shock absorber actually absorbs an amount that can actually take away some of your speed, so you can block that shock absorber when you're driving over terrain that isn't very bumpy this way you can climb a hill more efficiently or maintain more speed while cruising around town, and finally, for a $ 1,000 bike, you can expect to have disc brakes.
You are very important. I would suggest that if you are looking for your first mountain bike at least make sure you get disc brakes because if you decide to go down a mountain trail you will need them and not just your back brake as I find you are going down a steep hill Ride, which doesn't have a lot of traction. You're all the way down on both brakes to make sure you don't fly into a tree.
Buy a repair kit. You can go to a local bike shop, you can go online on Amazon and get certain Buy components that will help you repair your bike in certain situations The most important thing is to buy, it is like a universal tool and it has a range of Allen keys, It has a number of different components that will help you repair your gears while you are riding, when You are in the middle of a mountain path, blown a tire and have no way of repairing it, and now you go 1 3 miles back to your car like you don't want this so just do it Sure, if I can make one recommendation, it's that you have those few little repair parts. So if you get stuck and stuck, you can fix your bike and ride or go out.
as ks for watching! Yeah I bounced off pretty well, I got it on GoPro! hahaha makes all those weird noises you know when you got that hurt hurt hurt buy a helmet oh yeah! You can't really go wrong buying from a big brand like Spezialized
Which brand is better Trek or Specialized?
There isn't a clear winner. Both offer similar bikes and components in the same price range. Trek has a wider variety of bikes to choose from compared to Specialized. At entry-level, you get slightly better parts when you go with Specialized.
Next we're going to talk about downcountry bikes. - Can you do the outro all over again, - Yeah. Don't look at you? (everyone laughs) - 'Hey Max, should I do the outro now?' (intense energetic music) (cyclist screaming) (soft energetic beat) - Hey everyone and welcome back to the cross-country field test.
And today is round table time and we're talking about racing bikes. Sarah Moore was on the brand new Specialized Epic, the new Cannondale scalpel, Treks Supercaliber and Canyons Lux. Special guest today Mike Kazimer from the USA.
He really wanted to be up here with me with Lycra, but he's trapped in the States, the borders are closed Today he's moderating the conversation, over the computer - Exactly, the magic of the internet, I'm really sad that I don't have Lycra and sprint through the forest with you.- I will visit you soon Kazand we will do a little lycra ride together. - Okay.
Well, let's just start with a question that everyone would want to know. Sarah, what was your favorite bike of these four? - So I think I really liked the Specialized Epic, this modern geometry that is really forgiving in terms of traction, it really is, but the Cannondale Scalpel, I just thought that the suspension is a little more predictable on longer days. (Mike Levy hums in agreement) - Yes - World Cup races are really gnarled these days.
You know, (Mike Levy hums in agreement) people kind of underestimate what these people do because they wear lycra. They don't wear knee pads and you don't have a full face, so you think the terrain is too easy. (Mike Levy hums in agreement) Canyon Lux, probably not my first choice, a bit more you know, not that easy to ride on the steeper parts.
Traction is not all that good. I mean, if I wanted to go horse riding In one mile hill intervals, maybe this would be the bike I would choose, but it's not my favorite thing to do, so- So Sarah, that leads to the next question.
Of all these bikes, the Lux was your least popular bike? - Yes. For a couple of things. I think the suspension just wasn't that active, it didn't make good use of the 100 millimeters of travel.
I felt kind of crumpled up every time I was on this bike, it just didn't feel like I was being monitored, had that really long stem and then that lockout combination with the dropper posts, (Mike Levy hums in agreement) frustrating to drive it. So, yes, I think Canyon Lux is a simple one, that for me, you know, I really don't want to spend more time on this bike - so Scalpel is your favorite, the Lux maybe your least favorite, or definitely your unpopular , but is there one of those bikes you'd like to spend more time on? Say you feel like you are somehow figuring it out, but need a little more time to really immerse yourself in it? - Yes. I think Specialized Epic I'm really excited and I think just because I've done back-to-back tests on all of these other bikes the brain just needs a little more time (Mike Levy hums in agreement) to get used to it and also when you ride it , you know it's easier to get used to rather than riding back and forth on traditional full suspension bikes - so Sarah, the Epic versus the scalpel, the geometry numbers aren't that far away, but the Epic has this brain -Function, that kind of inertia valve basically that makes it feel different? - Yeah, I love that the brain that you don't have to think and never have to use a lockout.
It's a super clean handlebar. And then, yes, when you're really tired, you don't really want to have to think about unlocking your suspension before going down a descent, something technical, definitely been in the situation when you come up a hill and then forget to unlock it and then halfway down the hill you think I'm really very sketchy on my cross country bike which was hard enough to ride at all if you don't have to think about it, that's great. So I think the Specialized Brain is doing a lot of things right and I'm looking forward to spending more time on it - which was the fastest bike of these? Do you take into account the efficiency, based on the efficiency test and only your total lap time, which was the fastest? - In the efficiency test, the Canyon Lux was the fastest of all these motorcycles.
Specialized Epic was six seconds slower I believe if we remember correctly. - Yup, Yup - And so in fast motion it was interesting, because it was almost like the whole thing was turned around. (Mike Levy hums in agreement) So the Canyon Lex was actually my slowest on the time lap, and then the Specialized took second place, and it was the Cannondale scalpel that - yes - so - yes - really active, forgiving suspension who was fastest on our pretty technical Rudy test course.- Yeah, I think this is a good example of some real world test, you know, this Fireroad Climb we use for the efficiency test is not, I mean, it is out there in the real world, but it really isn't and it won that test.
But on our time warp or further single track, it's tricky, it's slippery. It didn't go that well. (Sarah hums approvingly) Yes - And so you will spend more time on a cross country race, is on your stuff - Right - that is, you know, a little - Yes - more difficult - Now you're 'I have to really have experience, all these motorcycles are built as World Cup capable racing bikes, where do you see the future of them? For example, do you think that the more forgiving motorcycles are the future, you know, vario seat posts and that sort of thing? It's a bit like the category Levy is going to be talking about, but do you think there are certain things about all of these four bikes that really stand out that you really liked, as far as direction goes? - You know, the Canyon and the Trek Supercaliber, we may see that they get slightly flatter head tube angles, a bit more reach.
But I don't think we'll see any drastic changes in this category because they're racers. - Yes.- They are, you know, tried and tested, but I mean there are tons of athletes out there who are superstitious.
If you've won on a motorcycle, you want it to be - right - completely different? And even like in a mass start race, you still need that nimble handling. If you're like 160 people in (Mike Levy hums in agreement) at some of those men's races, like 85 and 100 women in the women's field, you have to be able to wind your way through people, make quick decisions, and you know, a shorter one Bike will be better at it. - So we have your favorite, your least favorite, that you would like to spend even more time, but was there a bike that surprised you? What bike did you take with a few preconceived notions and it really surprised you when you actually rode it on the trail? - I say Cannondale Scalpel.
I didn't expect to get out of this and that this (Mike Levy approvingly) would be my favorite bike of all. And then I mean, as a category as well as overall, I was surprised that I felt as comfortable as I did, you know, to ski the descents on these. You know, 10 years ago when I was doing cross-country races, I didn't feel that comfortable on the descents (Mike Levy laughs) - Very different times now - I liked different bikes, much shorter.
And so let's look at these bikes now and you know, when you 're riding a trail bike or an enduro bike, you think,' Phew, those are, you know, dated numbers. ' But if you look at cross country road bikes 10 years ago (Mike Levy hums in agreement) like we should have been wearing full face and knee pads like. - Correct? (all three laugh) - We are putting our lives on the line.
Every time we went - Exactly! - to a race. - Yes / Yes. So these bikes just feel much more comfortable as a category and you are in control - So that's it for the discussion for the cross country racing bikes in our field test Kaz on my bike and I think we will do a little ride on the tandem together .
Are you with Kaz? I'm going to get some lycra-- - that sounds great to me up front. I put on lycra. (Sarah laughs) All right.
Let's meet it. (energetic music)
