Michelin mountain bike tires - Complete Manual

Are Michelin MTB tires good?

They're a good option for the front and rear wheel of a Trail bike, even in wet conditions. However, if you want maximum climbing efficiency, you'd be better off with a faster rolling tire on the rear. The Wild AM is a good all-round tire, delivering a convincing performance on every kind of terrain.





Check out all of this rubber - and it even has pimples for my pleasure! What's going on guys? Jeff from Worldwide Cyclery. This will be a short article - nothing too complicated - about tires. Hopefully, to demystify all these insane amounts of options when it comes to mountain bike tires (and not to mention just one brand) which I think is probably the biggest name in mountain bike tires which is Maxxis.

I don't know, Schwalbe is quite big, and there are a few others, but Maxxis is one of the biggest out there. They make a number of different models, which we'll go beyond some of the most popular - some of the tires that have been around for a long time and that are kind of iconic in the mountain bike world. So at the beginning with all the different tires, which one is right for you? It really depends on what you do on your bike, where you ride, the dirt you ride on, and just the type of riding style, doesn't it? So you can go all the way on a cross-country mountain bike.

The Icon is a very popular cross-country tire. You will notice some of the key differences between a cross country tire and a downhill or enduro tire. The weight and overall width of the tire make a big difference.



So cross-country tires range from 1.8 to 2.1 / 2.2, while a trail bike tire can be 2.3 to 2.35 up to 2.7.

The tires are kind of getting a lot wider these days - or I guess they're not getting wider, but people only use what used to be called downhill bike tires on their trail bike because they love traction. It's just a good overall tire and works really well, so weight and width are the two biggest things when it comes to tires. The lighter the tire and the thinner the tire, the more it will be geared towards a cross-country mountain bike, and the stronger and gnarled and heavier the thing gets, the more it will be towards a downhill mountain bike or an enduro bike be aligned with longer spring travel.

The tires we're talking about these days - we're just looking at general mountain bike tires again - we're not really going to be looking at plus or fat bike tires or anything like that. Just some of the basic ones. So Icon's general cross-country mountain bike is a very popular, fast rolling tire, super light.



You can tell these lugs are really small so this won't be like a crazy good traction tire - but it's really more for decent traction. But the idea behind this tire is speed, rolling resistance and lightness. If you step up a bit you have an Ardent Race, so that will maybe you can put that on a cross country bike too.

There's a little more traction here, but it's still light and has a good center profile too. Ardent Race is a pretty popular tire cross. We're talking about cross-country tires again.

The Maxxis Ardent tire is a great rear tire on the back of a cross country or atrail bike. He's just the normal Ardent, not the Ardent Race. This is a kind of all-round tire.



At 2.4, it's a pretty common size. That bike behind me, Yeti SB4.5, is a 4½-inch chassis known as the Mittelweg 29 or trail bike.

Yeti specifies it with Ardent tires - they're great, they roll fast, they're super light, and again it's a bit of a lightweight trail / general mountain bike tire. I know this is a vague terminology, but quite common on a 4 'travel, 4½', 5 'travel, 29 or 27.5.

Popular tire. Works great, they are not the best grip. So we've definitely seen people put some heavier tires on even a bike like this just to get more traction.

Something like a MinionDHF. The Minion DHF is probably the most popular Maxxis tire out there, at least when it comes to downhill and enduro and one of the kind of modern trail bikes that are being reared these days. It used to be a 2 / 2.5 tire.

That's a 2/3 here, but a 2.5 used to be something for downhill bikes only. But these days almost everyone runs 2.4 / 2.5 on their trail or enduro bike, so a pretty common thing.

This is an SB6, even though it's a 27.5 'bike with 6' of travel (this is called an enduro bike) that has a DHF at the front. Here too, DHF is a very popular tire.

You can see this in everything from a World Cup winning downhill bike to your enduro bike to a mean suspension travel of 29 or so. Very versatile tire. It's pretty heavy and beefy, but that also means it's really strong.

It has a thick side wall, it will be much more durable than something like an ardent - so. a very popular tire. Next up is the Minion DHR-2.

So this tire was originally intended as a downhill tire, but people ride it on enduro and trail bikes these days. Another phenomenal tire, here a slightly different middle profile section, but will have the same corner lugs as a DHF. So it's not a very different tire to a DHF, but I think the idea here was a bit faster rolling resistance or maybe a slightly different response when braking.

What else do we have here? Maxis aggressor. This is pretty popular for a rear tire these days. You can see how many buttons and how flat they are in the middle.

As a result, the tire rolls very efficiently, which is why it is a commonly used rear tire. These are the standard tires that Yeti specifies for its SB6 enduro bike. Again 6 ”travel, 27.5 wheels, DHF at the front and an aggressor at the rear.

A very popular station wagon these days. Strong tires, super good traction, thicker sidewalls - great for a trail bike, but more often on an enduro bike to a downhill bike. And again, when it comes to tires, Ardents are really popular for general trail bikes.

Minion DHFs are probably the most popular of all the Maxxis tires that have been around and have a ton of world cup downhill race wins under their name and I think some enduros are racked up have WorldSeries wins under their name. So there are a lot of tires to choose from, but some of the most important things are the width of the tire (the wider the more aggressive it gets) and you can tell from the pictures how aggressive the lugs are. The more aggressive these lugs get, the more traction you can expect from this tire.

And the wider the thing gets, the more likely it is to be an enduro bike where it's a bit narrower. Or if you compare the weights between tires you can see it really easily. All of these tires are listed everywhere and usually have the weight in grams, so you can determine whether it is a lighter tire or a heavier tire and you know which application it is made for.

And it really just depends on where you are driving. Whether Icon or Ardent or DHF, it will work on your bike. Where you ride, how you ride and what type of bike you ride, we determine which tire makes the most sense for you.

You know we're shooting this article in Southern California right now and most of the time out here it's dry and dusty and loose over hard pack, whereas you can go all the way to Pennsylvania and have mud roots and it gets wet all the time. Well, maybe not always, but often more than here. So there are a lot of different terrains out there - and tires that go with them.

We actually have some mountain bike tires too, but we're not going to talk about them today, so you will immediately notice that there is a big difference between these tires and this tire in this box, as well as this tire here.

The main difference is that this tire is folded while these hoops are not folded. So there is a huge difference between these tires, usually called clincher tires, and these are more like folding tires depending on the tire, but in general, people say the folding tires are a little easier to get on and off the tire Just because they're a bit more flexible and the wider tires tend to be a bit cheaper so you can save a bit of money by going with the wire bead route, so let's go over some of these options. So when we talk about racing tires it's a whole different topic that we're not talking about today - Drive and Don't Worry About These Things The downside to these tires is that they are much more expensive than the other two tires we only have recommended these start at around $ 50 and if you are lucky enough and you have time to shop online you can find these on sale you can usually get these for around forty dollars, if you are really lucky you can get down to $ 35, but again it depends on the type you get there are two types of these hoops there are the folding style I have here which is more expensive than the wired bead which is the more open style just like these two that are we just checked. So if you can find them much cheaper online make sure you get the right one if you don't If you want the wired bead and the foldable one, make sure you pick the right one. These are usually at least five dollars more than the $ 4045 wire feeder, if they're ever on sale I'll be stocking up on a couple of them so if I need to replace them I'll have them instead of waiting and getting them full price later buy when I can't definitely buy a few of them because you will use the theme at some point, so these are handmade in Germany really great product highly recommended I've ridden them on gravel roads I ride my racing bike everywhere and have this one currently on many of my motorcycles these on my racing bike I have these on my wife's racing bike I have these on my cyclocross bike and I ride well on dirt roads, good on mountain bike trails and again no problems unbelievable durability on these incredibly fast rollers still p take part in races on these.

So if you are looking for a commuter tire that you can still go hard, fast and keep up with, this is the tire you want if you want to save money and still have something incredibly durable, go with these Rubble Marathons You can't go wrong with either. The only problem with these ones is that they have a bit more rolling resistance so you won't be able to go quite as fast as with the Gator skins, but these probably go a little better in the rain, so I have to say I didn't do anything with either of them can go wrong, but I still hope you found this article useful if you have other road tire suggestions to use for training or commuting that I haven't featured in this article I'm sure one more Number of others are available.
