Female cyclists - simple answers to questions

Who is the best woman cyclist?

And with us on the GCN set today we have Mayalen from GCN En Español, who is probably one of them. - Ah, no no (laughs), I only like bicycles.

It is really difficult to only choose 10 drivers. So if we missed anything just comment on us below, who do you think should be on the list? It's a list of different drivers that you may not have heard of, but we think they are the bad guys of the sport. (both laugh) (funky mid-tempo music) - Let's start with the absolute boss of women's cycling and the most highly decorated cyclist of all time, 31-year-old Dutch cyclist Marianne Vos.

To this day, at the age of only 31, she has three world championship titles in the road, seven in cyclocross, an Olympic gold medal and numerous mountain bike and track records. She started cycling very early when she was inspired by her older brother, but was allowed to just train with him When she started racing it really became clear that she was very talented and became a world champion when she was only 19, so it's really no wonder why they call the cannibal. (funky mid-tempo music) - Number two on our list, it's a new talent.

Arlenis Sierra, she comes from Cuba and races in the Astana Women's Team. Arlenis had to overcome politics, poverty and separation from her family to achieve her dream. You have to take care of her because she just won the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Race, she's one to watch this year. (funky mid-tempo music) - Lael Wilcox stormed the ultra racing scene in 2016 when she completed the 4,400 mile Trans Am Bike Race.

She did it in just 18 days, an average of 235 miles a day, with less than 5 hours of sleep a day. She overtook the leader on the very last day and overtook him to become the first woman to win the race straight away. Lael was first inspired into ultra racing when she was in Israel and studied at the Holyland Challenge and has since held both the men's and women's records at the Baja Divide, which she co-founded.

In addition to racing, she also runs the Anchorage GRIT in her hometown of Canada, which aims to get more young girls into cycling. (funky mid-tempo music) - Another woman who made our list is the incredible Norwegian mountain biker Gunn-Rita Dahle. She has just turned 46, she has just retired from cross country racing but she is going to do some marathons but her palmares are amazing.

She has 30 world cup victories and nine world championship titles. And I think she's an example for all the cyclists out there because she had her son and then won more. She is just great. - Amazing. (funky mid-tempo music) - We really feared the worst when Annemiek was eliminated from the Rio 2016 Olympics, but thanks to a miraculous recovery, she had one of her best seasons to date last year.

She is absolutely dominant in the time trial and is often the only rider to choose a time trial bike for the most technical and uphill routes. But she is also an incredible GC rider who took overall victory at the Giro Rosa last year and took her to the line fought with Anna van der Breggan at last year's La Course, which is arguably one of the best races of last season - it is. And she also won the World Time Trial Championship last year.

But she fell in the road race, but she is still in Target reached. I think she broke her femur and then had a really long recovery then but of course she's a fighter and we'll see in a moment what's expected so just check on her, she's amazing. (funky mid-tempo music) - Okay, so this is actually a bit of a cheat.

The Adventure Syndicate is actually a group of women who are not only incredibly talented at ultra distance cycling, but also work with schools and young girls to get more people on bikes and learn survival skills. Just a few members are Emily Chappel, who is a former London bike courier who won the Trans-Continental race, and the Scot Jenny G Raham, who recently circled the world, completely self-supporting on a bike, the previous women's world record at 125 Days completely broken. That's 20 days less than the previous record - Wow. (jazzy piano music) The next one to make it on our list is Dame Sarah Storey.

She is the UK's most versatile Paralympic cyclist. Sarah was a swimmer in four Paralympic Games before switching to cycling in 2005. Since switching careers, Sarah has added nine more gold medals to the six she has already had from swimming.

Sarah has also competed with disabled athletes and formed the team for England for the Commonwealth Games. She also has UCI track medals with the She's amazing, I drove her to the Paralympic Games and she's so fast you can't imagine. (Jazz music) - Eileen Sheridan is an absolutely incredible time trial and racing cyclist who broke every single record of the Women's Road Records Association in the 1940s and 50s.

meals for cyclists

She was only six feet tall and was known as the Pocket Rocket. Sounds a bit like someone we know doesn't it? - Emma. (laughs) (Woman in red laughs) - Despite all the advances in equipment, training and nutrition, an unbelievable five of her records are still standing today.

One of them is the London-Edinburgh record, which she set in just over 20 hours for 700 kilometers, which is just amazing. (Myalen sighs) (jazzy music) - Next up on our list is Rachel Atherton. She is the face of downhill mountain bike racing.

She has won five world titles. But she makes our list because she encourages women's cycling to make it in this incredible, male-dominated sport. In 2016 she won 10 consecutive World Cup rounds and won every race she competed in and had the perfect season.

So it is clearly superior to the competition. She knows how to overcome so many falls and is not afraid of what she does because what she does is amazing. It's that fast between so many rocks and so many trees.

I don't want to do it. (laughs) - I know it's just scary for me. (springy mid-tempo music) - Alfonsina Strada is the only woman who has ever completed one of the three Grand Tours.

She started the Giro d'Italia in 1924 after seeing a newspaper entry from the Gazzetta and calling herself Alfonsin instead of Alfonsina to appear male. impassable roads. And she actually finished 20 hours before the lantern blush.

She has to be one of the first and most impressive female cyclists and still inspires us today, a few hundred years later - Incredible the world of cycling is really tough because there are many things we would like to include. So let us know in the comments below which are your favorites or which you think are the most inspiring Give us a big thumbs up if you feel inspired by this article if you want to check out our women-specific kit designs, go to the GCN shop. For another great article, here is Emma's climbing challenge trying to see how much climbing she can do in just an hour down here.

Are cyclists good in bed?

1. Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott) The Netherlands is the undisputed superpower in women's cycling, having produced current world road champion Chantal Blaak, reigning Olympic champion Anna van der Breggen, La Course victor Annemiek Van Vleuten, and the great Marianne Vos.

Many people. I'm sure I look at a bike saddle and think that not only must it be uncomfortable, but it's probably bad for you too. You know - causes damage, pain, numbness and, in men, maybe erectile dysfunction, maybe prostate cancer.

And yet many of us ride bikes and have no problems at all. Some cyclists, on the other hand, do. I did so so I can tell you that when something happens it is really worrying.

Look - this is my 'oh my god! My penis has gone completely numb! ' We'll come back to this as we explore the issues surrounding men's health and cycling. That is why we have partnered with one of the leading urologists here in the UK - a man named Anthony Koupparis - to provide solid and practical advice that all male cyclists should listen to and when you need a reason other than extensive clinical experience to believe what he says he's an iron man too and these guys spend a lot of time in the saddle. Before we start though, here's a quick anatomy lesson.

chest and abs workout at home

That's me the way I ride my bike. This is now a skeleton riding a bicycle and that done is a close up of a penis.

Stop giggling in the back. It's neither good nor true to scale. Anyway, jokes aside, it's really important to understand our own anatomy.

You will know, I'm sure that when you ride your penis and testicles are usually well hidden. The area of soft tissue between your buttocks and your testicles is called your perineum, and when you are on a bike, this area is in contact with your saddle. Under the skin is your urethra, which is the tube that connects your bladder to the outside world via the penis.

The perineum also contains the large blood vessels and your pudendal nerve, which gives the feeling of the area and therefore also helps with the erection. Above the perineum is your prostate, a gland that creates seminal fluid and that crosses the urethra. Given our anatomy and the shape of the saddle, it seems reasonable to make the connection between cycling and pain or numbness, erectile dysfunction and prostate problems, but let's take a closer look.

But no worry. It doesn't get any more vivid than what you've seen before, they suggested Anthony break this topic down. So we have numbness, erectile dysfunction and also prostate cancer, especially prostate cancer.

Let's start with deafness and first of all, can I tell? You my numb penis story? - That would be, yes

I feel like we know each other well enough to tell me about it. It was when I was in a wind tunnel in Indianapolis and we were doing a wind tunnel test, in which case you have to gently sit on a bike for 30 minutes while your bike makes a full sweep of the wind angles. What it means You have to be completely motionless in your upper body, because any kind of twitching will distort the result.

So it's a really artificial situation to ride a bike and after the 30 minutes I got off and I realized pretty quickly that I had absolutely no sensation in my penis, which is actually going on, because luckily you know that the sensation has returned. So in the end I think that nothing long-term happened, but what happens in the short term? Basically because of the pressure that you are putting directly on the perineum, you are pressing on the nerves and you are pressing on some of the blood vessels and that is what is causing the numbness. After a period of time sitting on a nerve it will take some very minor damage which is not long term damage, it basically leads to numbness in the area it takes care of, which is what happened to you.

So it's kind of the equivalent of falling asleep in a strange position and waking up with your arms completely dead and it's massively unsettling, but the feeling comes back pretty quickly and there is no long-term damage. Very similar to that just right. So what are we supposed to do then? If we suffer from deafness after riding a bike, what is the first port of call? If you find this to happen, get on the bike and it will be numb afterward.

I know more than I do, you get a proper bike fit and someone to look at your saddle and everything that goes with it. Now if you get on your bike for a long time and every time it is numb in that area and it stays numb and then you do the same thing over and over then you will inevitably cause long term damage but common sense takes over and once it does just get the right bike fit and saddle. A single period of numbness thereafter will not damage the sensation in this area or any erections and the like in the long term.

The next topic then would be erectile dysfunction and from what we've heard about numbness, is there a link then between cycling, repeated numbness that leads to erectile dysfunction? - the answer is no. More important is the importance of erectile dysfunction in the first place. The processes that lead to erection problems are exactly the same as the processes that lead to cardiovascular disease, which lead to a heart attack.

So if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or smoke, you likely have erectile dysfunction, but you are also likely to have heart disease. The fact is, most middle-aged people will start cycling. Now, if you are a cyclist and are of that certain age developing erectile dysfunction, your first thought shouldn't be, 'Oh, this is my saddle just because of the cycling.' It shouldn't be burying my head in the sand This could be an indication of something that has not been diagnosed.

I need to get this checked out. You seem comfortable with the fact that it would be quite difficult to inflict the kind of damage to your pubic nerve that would then lead to erectile dysfunction. So is it actually quite difficult to do that? The strange numbness affecting your perineum won't give you erectile dysfunction.

And in fact it won't give you erectile dysfunction. Go and get it checked out. First, to have a proper MOT from the heart's point of view, then why not have an erectile dysfunction treatment? I mean, the circle has come full.

It has gone from being a slightly chuckled thing to a real health problem that you can get sorted out. And then you will find them. What about prostate-related problems and prostate cancer in particular.

Fortunately, cycling has no effect on prostate cancer. But it's not just how prostate cancer develops, it's also the question of whether you are being screened for prostate cancer incorrectly. One of the things we use to give an indication of prostate cancer risk is having a blood test and there is a thought that if you ride a bike a lot you could irritate your prostate and this could be your blood test which is used as PSA Artificially increase blood test A prostate-specific antigen Blood test that gets to the point You did this blood test It's artificially increased and then you have a whole bunch of tests that you never needed because you rode a bike and that's actually not true Not it - there's a chance it could be affected a bit, but if you look at lab-based research on many, many molecular markers for prostate cancer, cycling and exercise make no difference to any of the indicators of prostate cancer, so cycling is good makes you fitter, it improves your cardiovascular health and all of the things that reduce your risk of cancer it does not affect improper prostate cancer screening.

crank arms length

And then it goes on. Fortunately, there is no high risk of prostate cancer. What we should do as guys is think about it.

So as we get older, the more likely we will get prostate cancer. So the first thing is now to be aware of some of the symptoms, the things we look out for are things like water work symptoms, back pain, problems with bleeding in the water, such things reliving those things then you should either go to a urologist or family doctor and have a reasonable conversation lead over the assessment. It doesn't automatically mean you will be screened for prostate cancer, but that particular doctor will walk you through the good things of a test and possibly the downsides of a test.

Then the two of you can decide whether to go ahead or not. I don't want guys to completely ignore it in the first place. And for the most part, we find these things much earlier these days and they can be completely sorted.

What age are we talking about here? What age should you worry about? And I appreciate that there are likely tragic examples of early cases you know, but you are right.

So and with mine in my practice, I have a very distorted picture. So we have such a large practice that you will have patients in their 30s through 80s and 90s think about it, and if you have any worrying symptoms don't panic, stick your head in the sand and lead Have a reasonable discussion and assessment of what the problem is, whether there are any warning signs to act on and whether or not you need to So there is no link between cycling and prostate cancer, but prostate cancer is a big problem for a large part of cyclists Just because they're men, they're middle-aged and therefore need to think about it Well, I don't know about you, but my biggest takeaway from this conversation with Anthony is that we probably shouldn't take our health for granted, we should face our own mortality and actually seek help when we need it because we don't get thin gs is likely d he biggest problem we will all face. Now I probably passed on a bit too much information when telling you about my numb penis in the wind tunnel but I think on that note maybe we should all try to have a conversation with maybe our friends at the club running it this weekend, at least have a chat about this article I think this would be a positive beginning experience with us and if you'd like to see another article on the same subject.

We just have one on this channel that will help you buy the right saddle for you to face the first problem of deafness directly.

Is it healthy for a girl to ride a bike?

Cycling has been shown to be an ideal low-impact means of addressing the issues linked to sexual dysfunction, especially among men approaching or in middle age. ' Indeed, it's the aerobic benefits and the boost to blood flow that's been shown to make cycling a sexual enhancement for many a man.

this article is for women sorry boys as a woman it can be a bit challenging to ride a bike sometimes nature breaks for example men are just fine i am here to help in this article i will give you a few tips and tricks on how you can ride a bike a little more comfortably than your mum Start with the one who cares most about the comfort of your bike. If you feel uncomfortable in this area, it will be very difficult for you to enjoy your bike. There is no saddle that is suitable for you all of which work perfectly for one person and it could be absolute agony for someone else, but there are many different saddles available, including some gender-specific saddles.

You may have to try a few saddles to find the one that works for you. Don't be put off by the way the saddle looks cut - a saddle like this one, or a really wide saddle, can be very comfortable for some women; every bum hurts the first time you ride a bike, but the more you wear, the less it gets It hurts when your muscle tissue gets used to it, trust me, and secondly, don't let men-specific cycling gear put you off For example, some women prefer men's shorts or a men's saddle Good cycling shorts will make your comfort tooth more expensive The product doesn't necessarily mean it's better or for It works, it depends on your personal preference Wash your shorts after every ride and use chamois cream to breed if you ride a lot in the rain it might be worth investing in some mudguards to keep all the splatter off your legs and bum off, having a sodden shami is no fun, but in Wales the prob is lem not really because it's always nice when weatherproof women find it a little more comfortable to sit farther back on the saddle so that there is more pressure on your butt and less pressure on your sensitive areas if you have problems with that Having comfort on the bike can be worth getting a bike fit You should be able to know how to adjust your position Think about where the pressure points are during and after each ride To do this, move your saddle backwards or tilt it slightly. It's a good idea to take a multitool with you every time you ride so you can adjust your position while you are out and about.

This is probably the one that many find the hardest compared to when you're in the middle of nowhere and you don't need anything worse than taking off four shifts to go to the bathroom, especially in the winter months need a weew why walk I don't really need to run There are several ways to avoid having to take off all your layers of cycling shorts without the bib straps that will make it a lot easier but don't worry if you have bib straps there are a few other tricks you can do on it try too, the first is actually one that I picked up from my old teammate on the street where you roll up your short legs and then pull it to the side. I haven't really tried this one and for obvious reasons I'm not going to demonstrate it today, the next thing is pull your bib shorts under your jersey so that you go under your jersey Pull one side of the bib shorts down and then the other side and then the bib shorts are free come down but i'm not sure how to get it back up without taking off my jersey on it is still being worked on some shorts are being developed for women with zippers on the back or detachable straps to make it easy for women to make nature break cycling a great socializing sport is nothing i love more than going out with my friends and having a coffee in a café and cakeit is great, but it is very important to have a little something to eat and drink and often on the bike i usually eat Every 45 minutes like an energy bar or a banana so that you don't run out of energy when you have a local bike port club why don't you go and take part in one of their meetings or group rides like this one, our really friendly group so don't worry there are also women-specific bike clubs toomy mum started cycling a few years ago and she took part in one of them Groups that aim to get more women on bikes, no matter what their skill level, and she absolutely loves to suffer because I just wasn't that scary, but it's a great way to get better really quickly without it really to notice And if you get a mechanical or a puncture someone in the group will always help you, if you are relatively new to cycling try find a car free bike path like this one to build your confidence and stamina, Without worrying about traffic or cars, when you are comfortable, you can drive off and do big climbs To tackle the road, braid it or put it in a bun like this for the aero gains and when you go out, remember to share your live location with your family members or friends so they always know you're safe Thanks for watching them all, hope this article helped you give you some tips and tricks. If you have any tips of your own that I didn't mention, please share them with us in the comments section below
