Cycling knee warmers - responses to the issues

How do I keep my knees warm when cycling?

The standard advice is to wear tights, knee or leg warmers when the temperature is 65F degrees (18C) or lower. Covering up protects your knees and keeps your muscles warm. There's no disadvantage to keeping your legs covered further into the spring.

Hi, I'm Phil Burt and I was the head physio at British Cycling for 12 years and helped set up Team Sky. This will be our first article on cycling and injuries. But let's first take a look at cycling as a sport and its injury profile so that we understand it well.

The first thing to say is that cycling is a very low injury sport. When you think about it, what is the first thing someone does when they are injured? If you can't walk, your physical therapist will often put you on a bike. Get knee surgery - the first thing you do is ride a bike.

peloton weight loss

And why is that If we understand that. That's because there are hardly any eccentric forces to control when cycling - it's a two-dimensional sport, not three-dimensional like soccer, where you run fast and change direction, so there are a lot less harmful forces in it, and it's great because as we all get older and wear out, one thing we may not be able to do is run marathons but you see a lot of 70 year old guys riding bikes really hard and that's why. Nevertheless, there are cycling injuries.

What are the top 3? Knees, shoulders and lower back. So let's take off our shoulder first. The reason it appears so high in it is that when people fall off bikes, they basically break their collarbones.

You fall off your bike, it's higher than a running position and you fall on an outstretched hand and that bone takes it and that's where you break. Well, we'll leave that on for now, though we may get into that at a later date and how you will recover from it. The lower back is a completely different article, so today we're going to tackle the number one cycling injury which is the knee.

The knee. So what we're going to talk about: Why is the knee the most injured joint when cycling? Well, if you look at a bike, our hips and pelvis are fairly well supported by the saddle, and our foot and ankle are completely anchored in a pedal, and not infrequently in a carbon fiber shoe. The foot is happy, the ankle is happy, there isn't much to be done to be in control (as opposed to running where the ground is and the trainer, toes off) it's very, very easy air “It's the knee, and it controls all of the strength of the two largest muscle groups in the body: your glutes and your quads.

When you pedal with it, the knee transfers all the force back and forth and is therefore quite fragile, and so even if you are only pedaling at 80 RPM it adds up to thousands of rotations - pedal rotations - where your knee is goes through this wheel motion during a long journey. That is why the facility is so important; Cleat, pedal, saddle height, reset. This boy bears the brunt of the burden.

And here's the oxymoron - cycling is really good for your knees. If you came to me and had a really bad knee injury, for example from your football, rugby or netball career, almost anyone can ride a bike, as long as you have the right setup, because the first thing every physical therapist does is you put on a bike to aid your knee in rehabilitation. But if you get it wrong, you can suffer a knee injury.

So obviously I'm not with you, but I want to help you, so what can I tell you that could help you? Okay, basically, when you experience pain in the back of your knee, a very, very common cause is that your saddle is too high and you have to reach too far on the pedal. So check your saddle height. If you have pain in the front of the knee, in the kneecap, it can often be due to a saddle that is too low.

We know that from good research. Basically, the kneecap is more compressed by sitting too low and can cause pain here. Often times, if you get pain on the outside of your knee penetrating it, it may be because your iliotibial ligament - a large muscle band on the outside of your thigh - is getting too tight.

Now that it's a little harder, you can treat the symptoms of it and make it feel much better by securely rolling your ITB tape with foam, loosening your glutes that may need physio guidance. You can try your own, but pretty often use iliotibial ligament pain or inside kneecap pain that people often get when cycling because the iliotibial ligament pulls the kneecap on the kneecap in a way that is often due to biomechanics. For example, if you look at yourself now and walk through the living room, and if you walk like a duck with your feet outstretched, and you're on a solid pedal system like a Shimano or a look that allows a little levitation in that way, then this will be cramped all the time and leading to knee pain.

So it can be a little more complicated and complicated, but there are some hopefully helpful tips for you guys.

It's that tough time of year, you just don't know what's in store for you when you step out the door, yes it's more too, should I say fall in love with our American friends Well I struggled to know what I should get dressed in the best of times, is that dressed? Work or going out to dinner etc and changeable weather into the mix and well, that takes it to a whole other level so I'm happy to tell you that today I have the help of G Siena Spaniels Maya Amaya, thank you, for joining me today, yes, I agree with you that autumn is really hard to move, especially in the back because you can, you can't change your thoughts, yes exactly, so today we bring you thanks to our friends and partners a guide to a sauce or what to wear for autumn riding Dressing for the unknown What is the solution? Lots of options at this time of year. The great thing is that you don't have to make that call before you go to the door and you don't need to have a support car or trailer with you so let's say it depends on where you live, of course, but you won't hear an Indian buzzer, so if the weather is nice or you've just come for a quick midday drive then you want to keep things light and simple somehow, shirt sleeves, jersey and a pair of shirts will do the job, but to make sure you are prepared for the changing conditions of the climate it's good to have a sleeveless backsheet like a skin full because when it's cool like the morning it keeps your body temperature warm and when the sun is shining it helps your body wick away sweat and you are in the right place Sarah and even if you go out early in the morning it's a little fresher, maybe you just want a little more, if you go out before sunrise then you might want something like arm warmers and beeches n gauntlets that just protect your skin and take the cold out and the best part is that they can be easily removed when you warm up so you can pull them off even while driving Now a trick with the arm warmers and leg warmers don't look good, but it does is a good idea to actually put them on before putting on your shorts in your leotard just so they are sure they fit really nice and flush and then when you want to take them off they will be small enough that you can fit now actually in your jersey pocket I tend to wear arm warmers in the first fall size and keep my legs free and then when it gets a little colder I then add the leg warmers, back to the core, this is the area that makes the biggest difference makes, because if it gets too hot or too cold it takes a long time to stabilize, so put on the vest or the jelly, it really makes a difference it's my favorite piece of water j a it's great and if you get a little hot you can always open it up in the front and you can actually take it off as most of them actually fit in your pocket small enough as long as your pockets aren't too full of snacks so you're at LongSleeve Jersey is the only thing when you're on the bike you can't change the options as you come is where they are underneath and just peg it and put it in your pocket, and me know the situations we haven't talked about which unfortunately is quite likely in the fall is the rain and that's partly because me and I both do our best to avoid it, but sometimes you just have to go out and im Rain riding or maybe catching yourself briefly, so it's a good idea to have a lightweight waterproof jacket and you can only find ones that are small enough to actually fit in your back pocket, or if you’re in, e don't have a jacket or don't want to wear anything that heavy then a waterproof chill or do a good job at least keeping your core dry and keeping your morale high and so that you can come home and take a hot shower we have those most important parts are covered, but we must also consider the periphery. One of my favorite pieces are the head banners.

It's great when it's a little hot because you can keep it on your head and it keeps the sweat away from your eyes never gets bitchy you can pull it down to cover your ears and it just stops the pull from the wind and then stick with your head Sunglasses are also very useful in winter can go through some clear lenses because they protect your eyes from mud and water and splash from the street. Then if you drive at both ends of the day you have this really faint light in the fall and it's pretty hard to see that it is so good idea if you are driving sunset or sunrise to have sunglasses with you too, personally I've tried gloves Avoid as much as possible because I would like to feel the brakes on my bike yes, but in autumn you often want a bit of protection so if you want something in between, I personally offer the fingerless Gloveyeah and I always bring an additional pair of gloves with my back, if it gets really cold and then your feet are, then in the fall I would say you can usually rely on a pair of socks that are good enough to keep your feet warm, but if you are with colder temperatures or a lot of rain, it is probably worth investing in a pair of old shoes, especially if you plan to go far into the H Driving in the winter month yes it's also a good idea to get a saddlebag for all of those extra layers so you can free up your pockets and put more things in and because it's getting shorter it's really important to have a few lights Having on your bike so you don't get it cut up in the dark, but with a little planning ahead, check the weather forecast and use the shifts you should be able to enjoy great riding well into the fall and don't forget if you like this article, give it a go Give us a thumbs up Don't forget to log in click on globe and if you want to see a article of training on the bike click here and if you want to see the GTN Drift Challenge with the Charles Barkley team you will find this down here
