  2. Rad Power Bikes RadMini.
  3. Rad Power Bikes RadRover.
  4. Rad Power Bikes RadWagon.
  5. Rad Power Bikes RadRunner.

(Bell ringing) - Hey guys, we're in McKinney Falls south of Austin Texas. Beautiful place to check out those new wheel power bikes with fat tires. This is the original, this is the high level RadRover and now they offer it in step-thru you could see it over there in white.

You really have to have that, it's a more accessible frame, but a little less stiff. This is really a higher achievement, isn't it? And I like how they bent the top tubes. They still have a relatively low standover height, as low as it gets, a pretty nice battery position, low and centered on the frame, a little further forward, so better weight distribution compared to that type of seat tube mount they have on the step -Thru, and then this is the RadMini High Step.

And they have a step-thru version of it too. So they really did everything with these fat tire bikes, this thing weighs about 69 pounds, it's nice to distribute that weight well, 7.7 pounds on the battery, detachable which is very nice.

So if you commute to work or something take that to the office plug it in or if it's really hot we're in Austin it can get pretty hot in the garage, that's tough on those lithium ion Cells, so this is a good option. Something that is also interchangeable I should really highlight this, I mean, isn't it nice that they use the same battery for the Step-Thru, for the RadMini, for their city bikes? And it's a little cheaper because they separated the motor control, you can see that here. So in a way it's a bit unsightly, especially on the white frame, black, all the wires and stuff mingling and you can see there's a lot of mess of wires up here because we have the display that Keypad, the brake levers, the gear lever and engine jammers on both brake levers that activate the taillight, it's like a brake light that's nice, it gets bright and helps you to be a bit more visible is out of stock, by the way, that's one great orange rack it's bright and colorful, $ 80 for it, they have an optional front rack and that's 70 bucksit mounts on the frame.

So I was talking about strength earlier with that slightly taller pipe, it's a bit stiffer, kind of torches back here. So having a luggage rack that doesn't interfere with steering won't tip over when you park the bike. These are all things that you will learn over time once you own a bike and use it a lot.

I like the way they did this, you can see they have this new badge up here, this is the fifth generation of these bikes, you see this down here, gen five and that's great, and these guys have for A lot of great work done for years and I feel like they really are, they're always just like they choose with the details, it comes with that plastic fender snow which is wonderful especially when you're through a few puddles and Ride like we could do later, or just like that, it's going to be a rainy day or something and that looks like a mou no bike and it's really very trail capable. I drove it off-road in soft sand in Mexico a few years ago, you just have to lower the tire pressure for it to work. But in many ways we built it up to be more like a comfort SUV so you can see how it has a very short stem, with those spacers a little higher up here and then we have a medium height handlebar.

You will be more upright and relaxed, from now on your back and neck won't go crazy as much as a really forward body position that you know is great for aerodynamics or you know, climbing and such, but a bike like this is it? more of a gravel bike or something, that's a perfect setup for it. Glad they paid attention to these little details. We have these sewn ergonomic handles and we match the Velo Plush saddle which has a handle built into the back, you can lift this thing up, they have an optional suspension seat post that you can get that I put on really nice 27.2 millimeters that seatpost diameter, and that would give you a full suspension feel when combined with this Fatbike-specific suspension fork.

So it has a progressive compression setting and a series of clicks for you to tighten it, which is a good idea if you're someone who really wants to maximize your range, inflate the tire pressure, tighten the suspension so you don't bounce Lose energy. But then we also have a preload adjustment so you might want the comfort but you're a heavy rider, you have the front rack preload so you don't lose any travel down here. There is 100 millimeters of travel.

Again, Fatbike specific 135mm hub spacing, nice thick 12 gauge spokes front and rear, no quick release on the back, but you can see they are using that nice steel torque arm because this is a 750 watt planetary gear hub motor. I think it's probably a Bafang product very, very powerful, 80 Nm of torque, climbing a little better The performance of this RadMini is because its wheel size is small. But this is still very powerful, especially when you step in and pedal a little.

Great stand that goes back there, nice big pedals, lots of surface area, very grippy and then when we're looking at some sort of that other side you see the disc in there, it's a plastic disc with magnets on it, 12 magnets and she responds very well, i was pretty impressed. You really chose the motor control to get the motor to start it makes some noise at these higher levels but I think that's what you get with hub motors that are powerful but it starts and stops really quickly and you have the motor jammer oversteering the brake lever. So, I really feel like they did a good job, check out this aluminum alloy guide, it prevents the chain from bouncing off the track, it also acts as some kind of impact guard.

So if you walk over a big log or something it's I'm going to hit right here, it won't hit where those cables are and hang you up so I really appreciate that, it's also another feature that prevents that your pants get greasy and dirty, I've actually been driving all day and those are light-colored pants, and because of this guard, I don't get greasy. So, an excellent choice. And then back here, great drivetrain Shimano Acera, three steps from the base of the Shimano groupset, it doesn't have a one-way clutch or some of those other really fancy features, but it's a bit lighter and probably more reliable than Shimano Tourney or Altus, with this a barrel adjuster Over time, when the cable sleeve sets, you can stretch it back a little and somehow keep the thing going and trueRad Power Bikes have a full warranty and you have more and more of these mobile bike stations set up to build the bikes just to drive and then cover everything that would be under warranty.

So you did a good job, this is an 11 to 34 tooth DNP, nickel plate d freewheel. This is actually pretty special, there are a number of- (Stranger) She says she wants rainbow colored hair. (laughs) - Rainbow colored hair, I can see how this bike would inspire that because it's a colorful one.

Thank you guys. Yeah, well, to me a freewheel looks like stepping down from a cassette, but you get one of the nicest ones out there, seven gears, 11 and 34. The 34 tooth is that really big cogand that does the starting and climbing easier, good mechanical advantage.

But you don't start with 14 teeth, they 11, so it's really nice, that's impressive, you don't see that on most other affordable e-bike drives. So again 14.99 for this spike, they've kept the price the same all these years and now the fenders are included.

So, I mean god! What's not to like about it? I am definitely impressed. That's the drive drive, I might want to complain a bit about the shift mechanism up here, it's pretty big and requires a bit of grip, especially this part up here is a kind of paddle shift. I think they went for it because when you have a rotary throttle, see, they have this little exposed piece of plastic here that makes it that trigger shifter just doesn't fit that well, and besides, that works pretty well when You wear gloves when driving around, maybe in the snow or something.

So again made pretty thoughtful. I've spent a lot of time over the years plucking their minds and saying like, 'Why did you choose this? Why not that 'And in some cases they responded and even improved the product, in other cases they had a meaningful reason like bottle cage bosses, look at this, they actually contain them, they are kind of hidden', I don't know if that's the one perfect place, it would be a lot easier to reach down and get your bottle right here but that's where they put the battery and remember that the weight shifts forward and gives you the best driving performance models they have the bottle cage- Bosses here on the main pipe. And then the high tier of the Mini, it just doesn't have any bottle holder bosses, so you have to pay a little more for the luggage rack, a couple of bags get loads of accessories like, there's a cooler bag, there's a pan, yes there is a porter, there is a larger porter, a kind of platform situation.

They even sell the child seat back here so you can take your kids on the ride and in that case again, nice to have those pretty sturdy, safe tires, and you know some comfy fat tires too. So, I see these again like SUVs, yes they can handle off-road driving but both chains will bounce around a bit, the suspension fork is pretty heavy because it's not an air fork but for what it is it's great. Has a lot of adjustment options and check it out, they even have a co-branded light now, says 'Rad Power' and it has that extra ring, and that aluminum alloy with heat fins on top to dissipate the heat, very cool! t something you see every day.

I just think they are doing a great job, these guys really took a close look at the details and I always enjoy looking at them and that's my real feel for the company, I think they are getting more and more people are interested in electric bikes and they offer a product that is pretty modular, like the batteries and stuff, that doesn't change so much every year that you become completely irrelevant after a year. That they use the same pack for all of their models, even in Europe we have a little four LED charge level indicator right there, that's nice. Kind of a semi-aerodynamic shape that goes like this, slides it up, mounts it, and then slides down and depending on what frame we're talking about, like if it's the RadMinis, you may need to lift the seat and rotate it or lose weight.

Switching the battery on and off is a little easier with some models, as with others with the RadRover, it takes a little longer. Here the charging port on the right is small rubbe r cover which is pretty easy to use, sometimes these are not that easy to use on other bikes, they don't sit very well. 48 volts 14 amp-hour 672 watt-hours, these weigh about 7.6, 7.7 pounds which is nice, I don't have an IP rating but they say they are very waterproof, as are the motor and displays.

They say you can ride these bikes in the rain and in the wet, you definitely shouldn't dunk them in everything, but it's nice that they have a full guarantee of that. And that replacing the battery is a little cheaper because the controller unit is separate. Another unique feature of these batteries is that the locking mechanism has three different slots, now you can slide it onto the bike as this pin doesn't protrude and then once it's on you can somehow push and turn and it locks to the frame, and you can remove the key and in that mode it's off so not on I can tamper with your display which is kind of cool.

Nobody is going to be able to use a throttle or something and then go to the next step, still locked and now you take out the key and the bike is going to work really cool for people who don't want to take this off their bike but don't want people tampering with it, locking it up and turning off the bike, I think that's really nice and there are a lot of other bikes out there that don't. Such a good job bike, and I wanted to highlight that the bikes come with a little tool bag, a bunch of basic tools, and then this is what the charger looks like. It's just a 2 amp charger.

It takes six hours when your batteries are completely drained, but it only weighs a pound and a half which is nice and having a removable battery for all of your bikes is really a nice feature because it means you get to commute on your bike and park the bike outside. Bring the battery inside where there is a charging port to avoid extreme heat because these lithium ion ce lls.Well, they are higher quality, i think it's samsung cells, the heat will only degrade them and You won't get as many full charge cycles so that's my advice to you but again, having the controller separately means replacement batteries are a little bit cheaper and now they have been using this design for a couple of years.

So it feels like they are committed to it and there is a bigger pool of used packs out there. So yeah, I think we should just go ahead. drive, I want to repeat it again, with this high-step frame this is the stiffest type of the toughest RadRover.

It's really nice to have the new Step-Thru model, and of course the RadMini Step - this is also a great option if you're someone who just has the hip for knee sensitivity or is just a smaller person but that Saddle height is actually very similar with these. Got the pan or a child seat or the insulated thing the tray, there are so many options with a slightly stiffer frame, especially considering that now a lot of the weight is back with the engine and fenders. The high entry is still a great option.

I really like this bike boot the display, hold the mode button here, yes it's 2.75 inches wide, it swivels, it's not detachable, but I love that they have this full size USB charging port have at the bottom. That said, it's great for the phone mount accessories they offer, and it's nice that this is pretty well protected with those medium-high poles so it doesn't get bumped or damaged on the racks as easily.

my bike got stolen recently

Five ticks on the battery infographic, it would be nice if it was 10 or if it were a battery percentage because that's 20% steps. So when you're on the last bar you kind of wonder how far can I go? But the odometer here and when I tap the mode button we go from odometer to trip odometer, that's kind of neat. Current speed in the middle in miles per hour, if you hold the up arrow for a few seconds it will go to the average speed and then to the top speed.

So there's a lot to this meter, the pedal assist level starts in one, but you can take it down to zero if you want the throttle to still work. It gives you full power up to 20 mph. So that's nice, you can ride this like a scooter if you want.

And then five levels of assistance and then watts, that's how hard the engine works. I start with pedal assistance level one, I'm really impressed with how gentle and subtle it is. It doesn't overwhelm you and it doesn't go too fast, often those pedal assist levels get kind of out of control even at the lower ones, so it's nice that this one is so slick.

Really smooth. I'm going to climb that hill in just a second and I'm going to take this to probably assist level five, to do this, to get the strength I need. I'm going to use the throttle, turn it there, we'll get really handy. (Chain breaking noise) Not so bad.

And then you know we're in a parking lot here tsmoother, you can still shake the tires on the ground. (Chain tearing noise) I have the fairly stable one, maybe the no hand shot here because of the wider tires. This is really an e-bike for on the go and I think that's why it's one of the most popular models that Rad sells, take a detour here on this dirt road.

Here I see the RadRover really being used the most and really shining. (Chain zip) I can hear the engine zipping a little, but just a second ago I actually saw a deer that ran across my path here which is really amazing, really must see some wildlife because I think e-bikes are are only quieter than internal combustion engines. So the point is if you are someone who likes wildlife, it's better for the environment, but it's also a lot quieter.

And now I want to show you those lights, so that's another really cool feature, some backlighting to make that nice And then the headlight, which is really focused, as well as this ring and now also more clearly visible from the side, so a really nice safety function that complements these reflective tires below, let's go. And then the brake levers, in addition to the engine locks, they also activate the brake lights. Just another way to be seen.

This rack is now a bit blocked, but the rack does pretty well physically protect the light if the bike tips over. So there are always small compromises and such, but overall not a bad, really good setup. I want to point out that the headlight is now showing where I am steering, but when you have that? Rack it would collide with the lights so they have a bracket exposing it here and then it won't spin because these racks are mounted on the frame.

So remember the frames are rounded racks, they're more stable, it's a really good set Okay folks, we have a 42-tooth steel chainring at the bottom between two aluminum alloy guide plates, it's really nice to put on your pants keep it clean and it acts as a shock protection. Here we have 11 to 34 inch teeth, this nickel-plated DNP freewheel is just awesome, it's great to have this type of gear range on a freewheel. Of course we have a Sarah which is a pretty good derailleur that is really well protected by this protection.

And then the pat protection down here, I'll start with pedals at level two because I like how quiet and subtle it is, but then I'll bring it up to level five so you can get the most out of the engine and watch how it reacts quickly when I start and stop pedaling (chain zipping) Simply brilliant. And I love the ability to oversteer with the gas at any time. I'll take that all away down to those 11-tooth sprockets and slow down, top assist, about 20 mph top speed, there it is.

Very nice, cut out just before 20. It's quite a nice cruise cruising speed right here, well that was just a blast, fun riding through McKinney Falls with you guys I got this bike, all specs, all hand measured, as well as some of the others Models and there is a really cool comparison tool out there so you can compare them back to back and find out the differences between the fenders, the upgraded lights, the heat sink thing is pretty neat. Yeah i hope it helps you drive safely out there love you.

I'll see you next time. (Cirrup sound)
