Go outside. Do you see these kids? They have the best time of their lives on their bike. They know what's going on.

You will never have as much fun as these kids. Unless you bought a mountain bike. Go to the store and listen to some guy who has no idea what he's talking about.

Try selling yourself a bike. Pick a bike and buy it. Get ready and hit your local trails.

It's time to ride your brand new bike. (Bike pounds) (moans) Realize that not all bikes and bike shops are created equal. Try again.

Well equipped. (bass heavy hip hop music) Start using sick words like shred and gnar. Keep driving, let yourself be overtaken on the climbs and descents.

The desire to be better grows in you. Get obsessed with your bike. Fixate on specs, head angles, and weird things like tire hardness.

Can you road race on a mountain bike?

With all the obvious differences between mountain bikes and road bikes, let's talk about ways to prepare your mountain bike for a road race. Mountain bike riders can make some modifications so their mountain bike performs decently on pavement. In fact, if you're racing smart that's exactly what will happen.Mar 19, 2013

(electronic sounds) - So the age-old question, what is faster, a road rider riding the road on a longer route or a mountain biker riding the direct route up and over the hills? To showcase their brand new Edge 530 and Edge 830 navigation head units, Garmin sponsored this article. But we have a free hand to do what we want, so instead of keeping all the doddies and geeks involved, I thought let's have a challenge, let's run a race. So, we have GCNsCN Hank right here, and we're going to have a race - Hey Neil - How's it going? - I'm a good buddy, how are you? - So yeah well thanks Pistyll Rhaeadr.

A beautiful waterfall Down two valleys but we need an essential item for this picnic - Right, Picnic, Wales, I'm gonna toss it out there.Welsh Cakes - You got it, but you know what? The store is in the opposite direction. It goes up and over the Berwyn Mountains.

So I know this forest neck pretty well. I've set your route. It's 52 kilometers.

Mine are 25, so exactly half, quite a bit. I set it on Komoot. And it says it will take you three hours and four minutes.

Mine takes three hours and two minutes, even though I climb a few hundred meters more than you because I'm going to walk right over that mountain - Okay, this is my first GMBN-GCN challenge and, to be honest, mate, me want to win that. So, I hope you've got your climbing legs under control - Well, me too. So come on - Right, are you ready? - Yes. - Three, two, one, let's go.

Good luck buddy. (laughs) (dramatic music) - (panting) I can only imagine how much easier the path would be. (panting) - Ah, not such a great start. (sighs) - What are you thinking at the moment? - Well, there may not be red lights, but there are gates down the street ages ago, probably 200 meters higher than me.

So at the moment I have some catching up to do. And it's damn steep. - Through the green light.

So my Garmin just told me I was on the Climb Pro and I am on a five percent climb that lasts for five kilometers. So I'll let this go a little, I guess. I need to move. (soft pop music) I wonder where Neil is.

It's probably in the middle of some trees, tattered, and I grimace. ooh. (happy music) - I got Hank on Live Track, and this is the road he went uphill, I guess, ten or fifteen minutes ago, and I'm crossing it.

I have a little more climbing and then I really have to go straight down to Llandrillo where we pick up the Welsh cakes, so I'll have to try to buy time for this descent I think. (upbe music) - On the way up the second climb, I wonder what Neil is feeling. Sure he's worse than me.

Sure. (cheeky music) Well, I went down there fast, and I can see on my Garmin that I am Stand up Neil. Come on! Right, here it is.

Let's get my Welsh cakes. Right, I think this is the right place. Welsh Cakes, Welsh Cakes.

Oh, let's go.Bara brith.- Welsh bara brith. - All right, here you go.- Homemade.- Now that’s, I think, a proper Welsh cake.

One of them, please see - Thank you very much - I think if Neil gets the same size we will be huge. How am I supposed to put this in my pocket now I just bought it? (laughs) Okay, I have my cake. Well, I better write to Neil because then it will show up on his Garmin. 'Hello buddy, got the cake.' Submit.

Okay, how do I put this in my pocket? , Here we go. (happy music) - Well, I'm looking for Welsh cakes. Do you have welsh cakes? - Bara brith. - Oh, wow, I'll take that, yeah.

Have you seen a man with a posh accent like one? red wrestling outfit? - Wrestling outfit.- Your friend? - It was a joke, yes, my friend.- Yes, yes, he was here before you.- Oh, he was here? - Yes.- Yes That’s fat.

You say how much it weighs? That’s about two pounds. Oh, half a pound. Bara Brith, it's as good as Welsh Cakes, it's very Welsh.

He just texted me. He says, 'Where are you? you, fatter? 'I think he's taking care of my tires. Anyway, right.

what is an almost perfect source of protein

I have a really direct route up and over the middle of the Berwyn now to try and beat it, but I have a big old climb, I still have 700 meters to climb. But I gave in the routes, I was a bit nice when I made it, and I gave Hank a bit of a shortcut on the way back. But it has a little sting in the tail.

Nice boys. We'll meet later, see you soon! (happy music) - I got my Welsh cake, I think it will be pronounced gwenwith, gwenwrith, Anyway, I got the Welsh cake back on the street. I just got mine, I just saw the arrow go the other way, so I think I got my average speed, the map is here now, and there's a shortcut on the left.

So I think I'll take it. Neil has no chance now, no chance. And then left again. (happy music) - (gasping) Oh my god. (gasping) It's pretty amazing up here.

I've driven around here a bit in the past but never found my way. And you definitely wouldn't trip over it, so well done to Komoot, for helping me to find this nice, that you can follow the breadcrumbs here. But it's absolutely y killer that. (Happy music) (gasping) - That may be a shortcut now, but it's not an easy way to get there. (laughs) And that Welsh cake definitely weighs on me.

He says five K up. Oh my goodness, so I have my Climb Pro on and that's the third of four climbs. And then on the incline, altitude difference, I'm at the bottom.

Oh my God. And it just keeps going up. Ah, and besides, I think That I wore too much clothes.

Ah - (gasping) That was maybe the most direct route, but it was absolutely brutal. But I think the top is right here. I have to be way behind now.

I have to catch up a bit. (upbeat music) - Please tell me Neil hurts too, do you think if I say wheelie and try a wheelie, can I use the word shred and be one of the cool kids? actually. I'm sticking to my overdressing.

Thermal Lycra. Yes, I sweat if you're all asking. Ha! Okay, oh (beep) .Oh (beep).

There's a car there. Right, okay. That's probably enough trying to be cool like the GMBN guys and Blake.I suppose Neil is in there somewhere, can't be as fast as me.

No chance, even with this stinking headwind. All right, my Garmin just pinged me and says we're on the waterfall road. This is the home run, the home stretch.

Can we see Neil there? Can feel him bite my heels. I know he's there. Right there is water.

That's a good sign. The waterfall is nearby .Says two Ks for now.

I have (exciting music) - It is, there it is. He is here. Have a cup of tea. - I was wondering when you would show up. (laughs) - Oh dear.

Lost the challenge. Look at that. Teapot and everything.- I got you a mug with an N on mate.- I have a Bara Brith just as big as this one so I hope you're hungry.- Well I have to make a confession about my welsh cake.

It took you a while so I started nibbling. (laughs) - Look at the size. - Well done, buddy.

That was a good performance. - Fine, dude. That was brutal.

To show that just because I walked half the way doesn't mean anything. That doesn't mean you can get here faster, does it? - No, but it was amazing up there. It's over the top beautiful.

It was swampy only in parts.- Well, I took a shortcut.- Yes.- And trust me, it was awful, the shortcut.

In the end it was a slow cut. - I rode it down. I've never ridden a bike.

Check this out, a cup of tea. Is it still warm? - It could be. - Yes, it's okay, it is warm. - (laughs) Do you want a piece of mine (laughs)? Break off a pane, and then you have one this size? - Don't you want a piece of me? - (laughs) - Right, so I have the Edge 830 with a touchscreen.

You have that, what is it? - It's the 530, yes. - It's the same software, everything. Just no touchscreen.

So hit me with some stats .- Alright buddy.- How long did it take you? - I did it in two hours, wait for it, 15 minutes.- Three hours 11 minutes.- Ouch.- How many cups Did you drink tea? - Well, this is probably my sixth. (laughs) - Then go on, average speed - 15 miles per hour - Killed me, mine was 8 miles an hour - What did you do? - It was that.

Oh, it wasn't bad, for loading , i wasn't that far behind you i think. and i could see you on live track but then went on the berwyns, no phone signal, and then we got stuck in a swamp and then i knew i lost it - Oh, all right, buddy. Altitude gains? - 1,197 meters. - 1,164. - Oh, that's quite a lot, actually - Yeah, it's not bad, is it? Right, for my flow score.- Well, I have 3.3, so the lower your flow score the better.- Okay.- But you don't get it on a racing bike.- No, so I have zero.- Yeah, but I have some cute jumps too.

It also gives you your stats on what's going on. - So how did you do your jumps? - Not bad, yeah. Probably three or four.

I have to look back on my phone afterwards. - Okay, last one. How many calories are there you burned? - 1,807.- Good buddy, you took this easily because I burned 2,494 calories. - All right, Chillax, it's not a race.

Oh it's a race - yes it is. Right, well, if you enjoyed this article then don't forget to give it a thumbs up. - Yes, push this globe to subscribe.

And if you want to see me from another GCN colleague, Si Richardson , be smoked, click down there - Can I start now? - Then go on, we finished that. - (laughs)

How much do professional mountain bikers make?

So, while 51.65% of riders earn less than ,000 USD, nearly a third of pro riders get paid more than ,000 USD per year and nearly a quarter earn more than ,000 USD.May 4, 2021

Welcome back beautiful people. You know I get asked that question a hell of a lot. And that means how do you become a professional? How do you do the job you love most? Well guess what, today is your lucky day.

I'll give you a draft, a blueprint for how to become a professional. Follow me. (happy music) The sooner you start riding a bike, the better you will get if you stick with it.

is maple syrup good for you

Simple but it helps. The easiest way to explain if you ride a lot, the more you ride, the more you learn You. And indeed the better you get.

Progress is the name of the game. Focus on what you want. If it's dirt jump, downhill, XC, enduro, road biking, anything.

But the main thing is that you enjoy what you do. Because that will fill you and your career screeching) So you run so much and want to get to the next level. How do you want to do that? How are you going to improve your skills? I'll show you how Getting noticed is always good to show your skills.

It would always be a good idea to showcase yourself on social media, film some cool article clips, put them together, and do a wheel cut. At this point you are probably thinking man this is so hard work, why the hell do I have to keep doing this? Yes, yes, yes, it's going to be tough like I said at the beginning, you want a good foundation for your career yourself there out there, will help you get noticed in the cycling world, which draws attention to bike brands and is on their radar which is good. Again, all you have to do is have fun on your bike.

Brakes screeching) Okay, when it comes to shooting a article for social media, you don't have to go out and rent a big camera to shoot a article. All you have to do is film it on one of these cameras. You carry with you all the time.

And the camera quality on today's phones is insane. You can make a lot of it. I know a few British athletes and stuff? make travel abroad everywhere, made a career by getting her friends to film her on her phone, quick cut together, check it out on social media; gets lots of views, all like that and starts This is the way to get noticed. If you don't like contests, become a social media star. (Joy music) competition time.

If you are competitive and you are attending some events for results, there are two ways you can climb the corporate ladder to become a professional and that is to find out what local events you have near you, and take part in it. Small events are a great way to get some experience before you meet the biggest ones out there. Damn, if I want to be sponsored and get my free bike, I have to sign up a pro.

So I did my first competition and I was the underdog and I got on top. At that time I reached third place behind Sam Pilgrim and basically the next time I came to the next event, I took on my first sponsorship. But that's in dirt jumping.

When it comes to Crosscou Whether cycling or racing or anywhere else, you have to go through the categories to get points to get to where you need to be. Hell, that's how Neil did it. He had to work his way up through the categories to get points, to get into category one, to become a pro.

With everything prepared, filmed (cheering) and you got the results, you will find a few brands knocking on your door with a few deals in hand. Remember when you sign that dotted line, yeah you, it's just the beginning. (happy music) Just because you have a deal doesn't mean you can sit back and relax.

You have to think twice. (happy music) You have to keep doing it. Yes this is I speak with my feet on the desk.

Get out! (Bike chain moves) (brakes squeal) But you can't live on free products alone. There are a number of other steps within the process that you need to get up. And when that all happens, you learn.

You learn marketing, sales, human nature, planning, filming, it all happens and you I didn't even know it. And just because at the end of the day you just want to have fun on your bike. But it does come with a little effort. It goes a long way in helping out when it comes to breaking a few parts on your bike.

You can replace them with free ones without digging into your own pocket and paying for it. But none of this is free. It has to come from someone.

You have to make sure that you keep your sponsors happy because you have to make sure that you are a good investment for them. So keep doing what you are doing. At the end of the day you're there because you love it.

You are in the right mood. You are passionate and want to embrace those emotions in order to move forward, to achieve what you want to achieve at the end of the day, goal mountain biking or whatever sport you do. Now it brings me back to having fun on your bike.

You always have fun lying. I will not lie. It's a job at the end of the day and sometimes in that job there are some things that you hate and don't want to do.

Some days you don't even want to continue But anyway, a rest day, whatever, you get back on your bike and you still love what you do.OK, after all of that it sounds like hard work and yes it's hard work but hard work pays off. Just think of yourself as a company in itself.

Your name is your company. You want to build this company to be successful. And that is the same as being sponsored and being sponsored and being a pro It involves a lot of hard work.

I really wanted to have a free bike for myself. So I thought, damn it, I have to do a contest. So I did a contest, I came out on top because I knew my skills were pretty good that time, but it pays off when it counts.

And then I went through the ranks. I arrived at FMB, I got to the top of FMB, not number one, but I got to a point where I was comfortable, where again I was noticed so other companies could see I could get started to promote the companies I drove for. That's the thing, you get free stuff, but it's not free.

You have to work for it. You have to promote the products that you actually drive for. And that's where all this hard work comes from.

And it never stops. You don't have a day off. You kind of have.

You have a day or two off. But that's it. Me moved all the way and then I started digging into social media.

I started working in the media world where I started working with a number of great filmmakers. Good friends of mine, very good friends today and I started working with them, started making good article content and then I started then I started doing it myself. I started filming myself.

Damn, I even did started my own channel and then i came to GMBN where i used all these skills i learned over the years and i brought them here and now i work with some great people and i always do still to my job. And I travel the world but it's not easy. It's super hard work.

too much pumpkin spice

Hopefully you enjoyed this article. Hopefully that gave you a little more understanding, a little blueprint for how to become a professional or how it is to be proof and how hard it is. It looks like we're living life.

It is a little. But it comes with hard work. If you want to stick with it and have a day in the life of a pro just click here, and if you want to see even more cool content don't forget to subscribe to the globe because you are missing some great stuff.

Give us a thumbs up if you feel like going pro.

How fast do pro mountain bikers go?

What's the average speed of an elite XC-MTB? The overall average speed for pro/semi-pro cross-country mountain bikers is ≈ 9 mph (14.5).Feb 5, 2020

Neil: World Cup races are fast, but how fast? It's easy to watch the fastest races on TV and think, 'This looks really cool, but it can't be that fast, can it? Not much faster than me. ' Today we're going to find out because we have one of the fastest racers in the world. In fact, he was the fastest downhill racer of 2020.

Overall World Cup winner Matt Walker pitted him against a local amateur legend and a mountain bike to beginners to see the time difference in the real world. Downhill races take place in all conditions. They are not canceled because of the weather.

You have to be a tougher person. Today we are in the middle of winter in sunny North Wales and the conditions will be pretty tough and so will the track. The route is 1.5 miles long with a 314 meter drop, starts quickly outdoors with some rocky sections where you don't want to go wrong, makes some nice big jumps, and then falls into the woods for dark technical roots fun .

Now to the candidates, starting with the professional Matt Walker. Career highlights, downhill junior world champion and overall world cup winner 2020. Age 21, height 5 feet 10, weight 78 kg.

Other hobbies, motorcycle track days. The Amateur Wilf Carey, AKA Notorious Nutcase. Career highlights that help build the Davi bike park.

He is only 16 years old but he is six feet tall and weighs 95 kilograms. Mag rugby and motocross. The beginner , Louis Belton age 28, size 5 feet 8 and a very spelled 65 kilograms.

As you can probably tell, his other hobbies are driving on the road. There are the drivers, now it's time to warm up on the track, to find the racing lines. It's time to practice.

Behind me there is a great example of string choice that I think the amateur guys don't notice is that the main string is in that rain rock you see down here and it really sucks you over the log into one big hole off and there is a really big upslop slam and i got almost really bad and lost all of my speed. Because I think Matt will notice if you get out of that rain rock a little earlier, go high over the rock near my bike, you basically cut! Getting out that big bomb hole will save you the impact and lose all of your speed. Probably worth it, I don't know, maybe a few seconds.

icarus movie netflix

Matt: I think it's hard to explain in one simple sentence, on some tracks it will take me a couple of runs, three runs to get up to speed, but sometimes when you go to world cups and the tracks are just longer, it takes more time, more runs to find where you want to go. Plus a work-up stretch quite often the lines change. It may take a few runs to get up to starting speed, but then as the lines develop over the weekend there is always something going on.

It can sometimes take until the Sunday morning before the race for the lines to be selected before starting the race. Neil: Fortunately, Louis only took a blow to his confidence and nothing else, but let's talk to the racers to find out their predictions. Louis: I've never been on a downhill bike before.

I've never raced mountain bikes before. Wilf: No, I've never gone downhill before. Neil: Are you nervous about that? Wilf: No, I think it's going to be pretty fun.

Matt: First big race for 2021. Yes, we did a few runs this morning. I did not actually been here before so it was nice to ride my dino bike to be honest and ride somewhere new.

We did four or five runs on the track and I really enjoy it. I think I've got mine I'm looking forward to this afternoon. Wilf: I prefer jumps and things than technical things, so it's pretty hard when things get tight.

That's fine. Louis: Oddly enough, I was less nervous at the beginning of the day, but after four or five runs I'm more nervous than before. Yeah, I've had some sketchy moments before and I feel like I'm probably a little slower than when I started, b But I haven't made the race so we'll see how well I do.

Neil: Do you think you will beat Louis? Wilf: Yeah. Neil: What are your chances today? Matt: I think I have a pretty good chance. I was pretty confident.

Louis: I think we talked about it today and I could look at 8-10 minutes or something like that on the way down. Matt: I think Wilf will be in a minute and Louis in three minutes. Neil: That's enough talk.

When the gate falls, the bull will stop. Time to run. Louis is up first.

Neil: How was it? Louis: I survived. I wanted to stay upright more than anything. I crashed but came down unharmed.

Neil: The time is 6:28 am Louis: No way. Neil: Current leader. Neil: How was the run? Wilf: Tiring.

Definitely tiring. Neil: Good run? Wilf: Yes, I hope so. Neil: Any mistakes? Wilf: I slipped a bit at one point, almost badly, but overall I saved it.

Neil: Fine. Neil: What's the matter? Matt: Fine, yeah. It is cold.

Neil: Any bugs? Good run? Matt: Yeah, it's probably really good because as far as I know the track is pretty good I think. Yes, very happy with it. Neil: He's doing it.

Well, of course it does. It's a super impressive time. 4 minutes 23.

Over a minute faster than the next competitor and two minutes before our mountain biker Louis Heimsieg, a Snickers bar. Matt Walker, his first big win in 2021. Neil: Now I know what some of you are probably thinking.

Neil why don't you make a time Put your money where your mouth is I thought I didn't really mean to show Matt. I used to be a professional dyno racer. To tell you when I finished second in the National Championships.

Would have won, but I stepped on the accelerator of the World Championship when I crashed. To tell you when I-- Neil: I'm too old for this. I'm 4 minutes 52.29 seconds slower than Matt.

Yeah, not even close. Thanks Matt, Wilf, and Louis for making the running. Hi thumbs up if you like this article.
