I think it was my father who once told me that the worst gift you can give a violinist has to do with violins. And he's right. Try buying a gift for a hobbyist and you are sure to be wrong.

This includes mountain bikers who can practice cross country, trail, downhill, fat biking or a whole host of other disciplines, each with their own equipment. It sounds intimidating, but I'm making it easy for you Today, Here are 10 great gifts and how to get them right without knowing anything about mountain biking. Let's start with the Crankbrothers f15 multitool.

beer electrolytes

At around $ 40, this isn't a cheap multitool, and that's exactly what makes it such a great gift. The quality is great, and it has more features than almost anything else out there. The cover has a bottle opener and can also be used as a lever to loosely pop pedals.

The f15 also includes a chain tool with built-in spoke wrenches. It is attractive, useful and actually very safe, as the cover prevents tools from sticking out in the pocket or pocket. The f15 is a great gift for practically every mountain biker.

And why stop using the f15? Get yourself a pair of mountain bike socks and your gift packaging is also safe. Berg bike socks or other bike socks are great gifts. Not only can you put something else in there, they're also important to have plenty of them.

We ruin these socks every day by crossing creeks, pedaling and other inevitables. I find you can't go wrong with a brand called Sock Guy, so I've linked a number of really fun options that will work for literally ANY mountain biker. Strapless gloves have been on everyone's lips lately.

These are ridiculously comfortable and just put on with no Velcro or fasteners. They make great gifts and I recommend getting them from Tasco or Handup. Some drivers prefer Tasco for its more rugged feel and cleaner design.

They are also available in 'two digit' colors ”packs with socks. Tasco is from Cali so I've seen how many drivers have carried them in the west. Here on the east coast, handup is almost ubiquitous.

They all have crazy designs and when you push your 'hands up' they spell messages. I'll leave a few notes in the article description to help you choose the right glove for that particular mountain biker. This next gift might be a little confusing for a non-rider, but trust me, the Genuine Innovations tubeless tackle box makes a great gift for any serious mountain biker.

The tackle box comes with a valve key built into the base. Inside there are replacement valve cores and strips of bacon that are used to close holes in mountain bike tires. The cap is an applicator for these strips of bacon.

What I like best about the Tubeless Tackle Box is its resemblance to resemble a miniature version of a car tire repair kit, which makes it familiar and easy to use. This kit can be a lifesaver on the trails, but it is not a good gift for beginners as it only works on tubeless tires, it needs to be re-inflated. CO2 is fine - if you have it, but most mountain bikers I know carry a hand pump.

Hand pumps are absolutely excruciating to use, which is why a good pump is such a great gift. This Crankbrothers Klic HV Gauge I use because it works quickly, has a detachable hose to relieve the valve, and a pressure gauge which is a rarity on portable pumps. The tube can even be stowed away compactly - something that mountain bikers will appreciate.

Since the hose is attached with a magnetic 'click', it's easy to get started. The next gifts are for action cameras. Anyone who posts articles of themselves mountain biking uses an action camera to record it.

These aluminum knurled screws are an inexpensive gift that you will love. Almost every action camera comes with these cheap plastic screws that are difficult to tighten securely. Not only do these aluminum screws look and feel better, but they are also much easier to tighten.

I've linked a multicolor package that you can get from Amazon Prime. If you're out on the trails, you might want to change something with a third-person shot. For this you need a compact tripod.

These two are really good quality. This flexible tripod adapts to any surface and can even be wrapped around something Getthe Shot, but my personal favorite tripod is this very simple tripod from Manfrotto. It works great as a handle, has a locking head, comes with a smartphone adapter and feels really classy.

Both are lightweight and easy to transport, which makes them fantastic tools to use on the trails. But mountain bikers aren't the only ones on the trails, they often bring a trail dog with them. Even though my trail dog only drives the park, he loves his camera harness.

It fits most dogs comfortably and works with any action camera. This strap offers a hilarious perspective and has two attachment options for the chest or back. This is a great gift and it doesn't cost a lot.

If your mountain biker buddy is a fan of my channel, you may have seen my article onbuild. You may even have expressed an interest in building a workshop and never seem to get around to it. Well, you can actually buy them a repair shop.

Just go to a hardware store and pick up a key component vise for any workshop. Gift wrap the vise and add a $ 150 gift card. This will more than pay for the wood and pegboard.

If you're skillful, you can even offer to help them build my article below has plenty of other goodies to add to the Gift Card amount. In fact, I have the perfect gift for it - a repair stand. Anyone working on their own bike should have a repair stand, and it's' easy to see if someone's already doing it because it's in the middle of the garage.

This is how professional bicycle mechanics work on bicycles, and for good reason. It holds the bike off the ground where you can pedal, operate all the parts, and stand upright while you work on it. The vast majority of bike shops use parking tools, which make a parking stand recognizable and a great gift.

This makes you feel like a real bicycle mechanic. That's it. 10 gifts for mountain bikers.

Of course, every mountain biker in the market is for pedals or a new set of handlebars, but these are the types of gifts that are easy to get wrong with. So don't forget the Amazon and Visa gift cards, which can simply be slipped into the bike sock. You can't go wrong with the comments below.

I have an audience of half a million mountain bikers ready to give you advice on what to buy. See the description for more information about this article. Thank you for riding with me today are and i will see you next time.

What do I need for mountain biking?

Mountain Biking Gear Must Haves
  • Mountain Bike. Jordan Siemens / Getty Images.
  • Helmet. A bike helmet is the most important piece of mountain biking safety gear and no one should ride without a helmet.
  • Eye Protection.
  • Hydration Pack.
  • Mountain Bike Shoes.
  • Clipless Pedals.
  • Mountain Bike Gloves.
  • Padded Bike Shorts.

So this article is an essential list of skills to help beginners feel more confident on their bike. But first I start with a really quick bike check to make sure we're starting off on the right foot I'm here on a very nice, eye-catching bike, these skills can be done on any bike, hard tail, completely rigid, whatever no matter how expensive the bike is, the same skills apply. So I'm going to start checking my tires (jazz music) You don't need a lot of tools when you start mountain biking, but a good multitool and pump will do most of the work for you, so there are two types of valves on bikes, you have Presta and Schrader; Schrader is the car valve, I actually have Presta, the smaller, thinner one, and a good pump has the ability to inflate both valves.

And I think between 20-25 psi is fine for most beginners. (quiet jazz music)) I like to put a little more pressure on my rear tire, up to around 28 psi, because you will find that this one needs the most of the abuse and that is the one that can cause bruises. (soft jazz music) Next, make sure you have your handlebar controls in a really comfortable position so that you can use them all the time.

bmx training

So with brake levers, you'll want to use two fingers, or preferably one, as most modern bicycles have strong enough brakes to use just one finger. So make sure the brake lever is in a super comfortable position. I like mine being relatively high on the handlebars, only when I'm in attack position on the bike, I don't reach over to reach them.

So they're nice and comfortable, my finger is right on the end of this lever for maximum leverage. Top tip, don't over tighten your screws, it's a beginner mistake most of us made when starting out riding. So make sure you don't overtighten them and you risk removing the threads on this screw. (soft jazz music) Now determine the correct saddle height What I do is set it at the level of my hip bone.

Then I jump on the bike and reach that end position. So what you want is a slight bend in your knee as you start pedaling. That means you'll be comfortable and get the most efficient pedal stroke.

With my foot in the correct position, you can so watch me pedal, you can still see my knee bent. The other way to check this is by putting your heel on the pedal and your legs should go straight ahead when your heel is there. So if you move your foot back into the right position, you have this nice curve, nice high, you get the best pedal position.

So I have a nice, fancy dropper post on it, so that's great for doing more technical stuff. I push the lever, get my saddle out of the way. This is not strictly necessary, you can do this with any seat post.

You can use a quick release or an Allen key because getting your saddle out of the way on technical terrain and steep descents will really help.Okay my bike is ready, hopefully your bike is ready, let's talk about some basic skills. (soft jazz music) Okay, let's start with this neutral stance or attack position, whatever you call it.

On mountain biking terrain, you likely move around the bike all the time to maintain steering and traction, and it all comes from standing on the bike in that neutral position. So stand tall on the bike with your knees slightly bent. It should feel like most of your weight is going through your legs, not up and onto your arms. You'll start moving front-to-back and side-to-side on a bike. (soft jazz music) Right, so hop on your bike and practice a few exercises.

So remember to really move your weight from front to back on the bike, you do this a lot more than you do side to side, and that's what I call the arc of motion. So my neutral stance, ready position. To go to the back of the bike, consider using your feet.

So heels down, really lower your hips down to the rear tire, there is a lot of movement going up and down, remember to dip your toes in, but your shoulders really shouldn't come in front of your bars very often. This could put you in a dangerous situation and very close to being over the bars. (quiet jazz) music) So it's surprisingly important to really practice this.

Really get a feel for how much you can move on the bike, but also know where your rear tire is so you don't pop in motion, but make sure you are using it at the right time. Because when you're at the very back of your bike, say, when you come into a depression, a steep descent, and into that ditch, when you go up the other side again, you have to go forward. Because if you're still behind, there's a good chance your front wheel will come up.

So, extreme movements, and then with experience you will know when to use them. (soft jazz music) So the ready position gives you a really strong posture and helps you get around and trade on the bike with that rough or hilly terrain that you find on a mountain bike. And this arc of movement will help you with those big ups and downs. (soft jazz music) An easy way to explain that center of gravity, weight, so moving around on the bike.

When you are in the neutral posture, think of your hips as the center of gravity. The neutral stance on flat terrain is in the center of the bike above the bottom bracket. Then you drop your heels and move your hips back, really, your hips will be there.

Again, your center of gravity will be in the middle of the bike. At the other end of the scale, when you're climbing an incline, slide forward on the saddle. Yes, it won't be the most comfortable, but if you do that and lower your chest again, your center of gravity will be balanced between the two wheels. (soft jazz music) When it comes to peddling, try spinning circles so you're putting constant power through the pedals instead of walking g stomp, stomp, stomp.

Couple that with your body movement as you climb and you get a lot more traction on the rear tire, which means you can get up the climbs. Just pull up on the upstroke; but with flat pedals, remember to scrape against your pedal on the upstroke. Seated climbing and nice circles are the best way to keep traction on your rear tire and that will work a great deal, but sometimes you need a little more strength than that to climb a steeper incline and then you have to rely on Stand up and use more muscles, your core muscles, and even your arms to get the power through the pedals. (soft jazz music) In the beginning you have to learn to respect your brakes because while they obviously slow you down, they can also lead to big falls.

So it is very important to have suspension on the brakes. By that I mean just modulating them very gently, so pulling them harder if you want to stop more slowly, the n decelerations in situations where it becomes more dangerous to use them, for example when cornering when you want to try your brakes solve as much as possible. You will also learn the difference between front and rear brakes and if you use them you will be completely unconscious.

You don't really think about it anymore. So I try to release the front brake, especially when cornering. In the UK we run front right and back left, but that's different in the rest of the world.

But try to find out which one affects the bike the most. The front brake holds a lot on the flat, but when it comes to steeper descents, you have to rely more on the rear brake. On slippery terrain or maybe turning corners where you need more traction then just let them loosen up a bit, and that's a lot easier if you only use a finger or two and you'll have a lot more grip on the handlebars.

If you ride along and hit the brakes, like all of your weight will shift forward as that force comes back to you, so actually shifting your weight to the front wheel, it means that the front brake is working very effectively, but a faster and safer one How to Stop Actually Matters When we think of the arc of motion, just think about lowering your heels. It will bring your hips back a little further. It will also get your arms behind the bars and the weight behind the pedals so if you step on the brakes now it all goes into the ground and you don't risk going up and over the bars.

That means you can stop much safer and faster. The first time I rode a mountain bike, I put a handful of front brakes on a corner, washed out and skinned my knees, and that was my first lesson. So you have to learn to respect the front brake.

In the UK we drive our brakes on the right hand side which I know is different from the rest of the world but it should become a really subconscious thing. Just try to learn which front and rear brakes you have and be careful with the front brake. (soft jazz music) When you are doing technical sections downhill it really is a lot easier if you lower your seat and get out of the way.

So if you don't have a drop post, use your Allen key or a quick release. If you have a dropper, great. You can always use these in a snap, which means you can move your hips around a lot more, soaking up things like this crotch; to really let the bike come to you and then push it down.

And just stay in a safer position behind the bike. (soft jazz music) So, moving around the bike, front to back, side to side, will really serve you. Well, another skill that you will use anywhere is to hold your head up and look.

So this really helps with your body weight too. Once you lift your head your chest comes back a little, putting you in that safer position, but you can also really plan what you're doing. So, especially with turns, technical terrain, you really want to see where you want to be because that works against you too.

Sometimes you see a big tree, or a stone or a root that you don't want to hit. Obviously when you look at it you're somehow attracted to it, so try to see where you want to be. (calm jazz music) There's also a bit of footwork that can really improve your confidence and traction in corners.

So get out of your neutral stance where you just have the pedals that when it comes to curves, start dropping your outer foot. This will clear your inner foot of all obstacles when you submerge the bike, but it will also lower your center of gravity and give you a bit more grip. (soft jazz music) These ripples flowing into each other really show the kind of lines you should be using.

Try to think about nice, smooth lines so you don't bend corners or go in, because that's where you'll lose so really try to open up the turns, be gentle on your bike and gentle on your brakes again. If you need to brake, so go down a hill, remember to pull up your brake so give it a really light bounce. and then release the front brake to grip the front tire. (soft jazz music) So there you go, there are some basic skills for the novice mountain biker.

Think about your neutral stance, stand tall and tall on the bike with your head up, and then move around, that arc of motion, front to back, side to side, then think about your brakes, springs, with Follow a finger or two and see how each of those brakes affect the bike. Even when cornering, remember to drop your outer foot and really look where you want to go.If you practice all of this, you need to find a large open space, move around, restart, do extremes, front to back, from side to side.

Also, see how each of these individual brakes affect your bike. Also, get used to kicking these lovely circles. Once you master these things you get to the really fun part of mountain biking where you can really progress, you start to ride more technical stuff.
