Bike pump - how to deal with

What kind of bike pump do I need?

The two standard valve types are Schrader and Presta (photo). Schrader valves are identical to those found on car tires. If you have bikes with both valve types, you'll want a floor pump that fits both (photo: below, right). And, your frame pump must match the valve type on the bicycle you plan to carry it on.

strength training for mountain biking

When it comes to pumping, size really matters. But bigger is not always better. So if you have a big one, it's pretty hard to hide and it doesn't look particularly pretty.

On the other hand, if you have a smaller one, you might find that it doesn't matter how you use it, how long or how hard you do it, it just doesn't do the job effectively Have an open and honest conversation. Which pump should you buy and take with you when you ride? That's a big deal - kidding aside, but size really is the biggest question, or at least stroke volume, which determines how fast you can inflate yours. As mentioned earlier, many pumps fit neatly in your back pocket and are much lighter too.

So you have to ask yourself a few questions when it comes to choosing. First, how often do you tend to do this? Flat tire while riding and second, how important is it for you to get your tires very quickly if you get a flat tire - Yes, let's try to quantify it, right? Let's do a little test. This Topeak Micro Rocket CB is probably one of the lightest pumps within just fifty-five grams times heavier at just 55 grams, but how much faster is it to inflate a tire, then, do you like a race? - Yes, I'm ready. ( groovy music) (groovy music) (groovy music) (groovy music) So then you have it.

A larger one means you'll be done faster in general. And in fact, I have to say that at least as a full-time rider I tended to have such a pump because I didn't mind my frame at the show and I just wanted to get started as soon as possible if I had a puncture in training - Interesting because I would always choose a smaller one. That I would just fit in my jersey pocket.

This is actually my pump, which Micro Rocket loved very much and when I bought it I thought that three or four times a year when I got it When I run down a flat tire, I'd rather spend an extra fifty seconds on the side of the road than haul that around for the remaining twenty thousand kilometers. However, once you've made that decision, you have a few other things to endure after all, pumps differ not just because of their size, but there are a number of other things as well. For example, there are 3 main ways the pump on your hose valve would block or open - you wanted to increase your pressure to 100 psi or even above.

You might want to use something like the thumb lock here that you can see on this Master Blaster. - Now this next one is really cool too. You get a retractable hose and then screws on the valve itself, which makes it even more secure than the thumb lock, but one thing to note is that this actually doesn't necessarily work with all valve extensions as you need threads to screw on, and obviously that I don't have one.- Finally the easiest of them all I'm one of those people who just press it on the valve and off you go.

Now I find this perfectly effective, but then I don't tend to go over 90 psi or have to put my tires up even though this one is able to get up to one hundred and sixty. You should also check, and I always find that on most mini pumps it is pretty easy to switch between a Presta valve and a Schrader valve setting. But it's worth checking that it will fit your particular bike before buying your pump. While we're talking about pressure, it's worth noting that if you buy a mini-pump designed specifically for road riding, you need to make sure that it is above 90 psi because you'll see if you're using a pump that is optimized for mountain biking so it can handle large volume tires that you may have trouble inflating the tire to above 70 psi.

Basically, you need bigger biceps, not the downside I have. See, Danny is stronger than he looks, which doesn't mean he's really strong, but he's stronger than he looks - So that's the mainstream of the pump world, but there are a few alternatives. For example, this bad boy who is like a robot in disguise by turning himself into a mini floor pump. - That's impressive, but if it were a real robot in disguise, it would indeed inflate itself similar to this one, which is like a mini pump but with a turbo charger.

So you can screw in a CO2 cartridge and either use it as a gasoline pump or just use it as a mini pump - and that actually brings us to another very interesting choice. CO2 cartridges alone. So there is no doubt that these are both the lightest and smallest, and definitely the fastest too, but CO2 cartridges have one drawback.

They are a disposable product. There may be a situation where you have more punctures or breakdowns on your trip than you have CO2 cartridges in your back pocket. - That's true, but in time pressured situations like a sport where you may have a goal in mind or a race where you need to be sufficient yourself, these are business.

However, for general driving we have to say that they are probably only suitable for minority drivers - when it comes to buying a mini pump you have to ask yourself a question. Do I want to pump up my tire super? fast or would I rather have something that fits in my pocket? Only you can decide whether speed counts or if you prefer to have something very neatly hidden. Also, you need to make sure it fits on your own valves, whether that is Schrader, Presta, or Valve Extender - If saving time is important to you then one of the next two articles might be of interest, if you just click up there I'll show Teach you how to change a hose in record time or down there, and that actually leads you to the process of using a CO2 cartridge, which, to be fair, is pretty daunting for the first time - and I suggest you do that Global Cycling Network as there are all sorts of practical articles out there when it comes to not just pumping but selecting all of the other things on your bike, all you have to do is click on one of us - yes.

Big or small, GCN is well worth subscribing to, in case or for both of me, can you put down your massive pumpaway now, please?
