What is a bike frame pump?

A frame pump is a portable pump that's designed to fit within a frame and become a part of the bike's front triangle until it's needed. Larger in size, frame pumps are also more efficient at inflating tyres than mini pumps.19 нояб. 2019 г.



Thank you for the tuning today we will review the Silca ImperoUltimate frame pump. While many cyclists have switched from frame pumps to compact Co2 canisters or mini-pumps, frame pumps still offer a lot of value. Frame pumps are not only more efficient at inflating the tire than a little mini-pump, you don't have to spend money on replacement CO2 canisters.

Now, if you are looking for a high quality pump, Silca is a company known for handcrafted and all-metal pumps. Today they become let's take a look at her Silca Impero Ultimate, which is her big frame pump. Now packaging is really easy.

You get this cardboard-style shipping container with Silca branding. A little red accent on top and if you don't know Silca, they have been around for more than a century and they make pumps for the Tour de France and a lot of professional cyclists. Now I'll take it out of the container and we'll go over the specs.



Selling price is $ 165, it's an all aluminum construction that is actually handcrafted in the USA which is one reason it costs so much. Now it's built to last too so it has a brass check valve and something they call FlexWing technology and that's for a really seamless mount on the bike. They have silicone bumpers to protect the frame from scratches and as part of the Ultimate line of products this is covered by the Silcashield Warranty which is one of the best guarantees they offer.

It's a lifetime guarantee that covers all other ultimate products. So here we see it very simple, all you get is a little package, you don't get a user manual or anything, it's just one piece, no chuck, no adapters and it's just a Presta valve that just pops up with no brackets install on your bike. Now let's look at the weight of the pump.

Now much larger than a standard pump, weighing in at 282 grams, Silca is known for their unmatched build quality and warranties and the ImperoUltimate frame pump is no exception. As you can see, it's an all-aluminum body with nice anodized red accents on the chuck. High quality rubber buffers on both ends for attachment to the frame and almost no branding which is interesting.



So you can see that it is an all black body that can only be seen on the Silca logo rubber bumper here and this is actually a bumper that you can move around. It takes quite a bit of force but you can see that you can slide it up and that prevents it from actually moving some rubber on the ends and Silca logo subtly here and then the other lining side has that red anodized piece and again a small Silca logo. The interesting thing about it is just presta and there is actually no lever.

They use a two step head gasket so you just slide this down and it has a really nice, tight seal. Obviously, however, you can't use this with anything other than the Presta valve well, you have to kind of inflate it by feeling that is a downside. Otherwise really plain design and you can see the lovely long thin diameters that really hide behind your top tube and with those bumpers and the little adjustable stop here you can really have a nice fit.

Well, that's what they call their Flex-Wing technology, it's silicone bumpers and you can see by the design that it actually takes one to two and a half inches of tubing. We were actually very lucky to install this on our carbon bike too, so you don't have to have laps although it works better with the traditional round tubes. You can see this lovely diamond design here, so it's very flexible so it really adapts to your bike frame when you slide it in.



So here we see the pump installed on my Specialized Tarmac as you can see there is a large gap here as the top tube of the tarmac is curved and therefore these pumps are better for retro round tube bikes, but it does still works and you can see it's actually out of the way when driving from the side. Top view you can't even see this pump because the diameter is smaller than the top tube itself. Here's a closer look at that Lining sides so you can really highlight the red highlights and it fits really well.

So you can also see when moving that there isn't much play and because of the curved rubber buffers here. It won't damage your frame either. Take a closer look at the handle side.

It's also arched so it fits pretty nicely against the carbon fiber frame, although this isn't a traditional round tube and as you can see when you move it it doesn't actually move on the road. You will hear a little rattle if you don't tighten this all the way, but otherwise it's pretty safe and you can even see with some force that the pump stays in place. Here we have a Topeak TurboMorph G pump as a point of comparison.

It's a mountain bike pump, but it has this nice mount so you can actually use it as a frame pump, but you can see that if you have those Velcro straps here, it's a lot bulkier and then it doesn't all fit that tight, so definitely not that optimal like the Silca. Here's a closer look at the topeak. You can see the Velcro straps here rubbing against the frame over time and damaging your paintwork and this is something that actually took the clear coat off my other bikes, so one reason to avoid these type of mount designs with a frame pump the pros and disadvantages of the Silca pump.

What we like about it is that it fills up very quickly. It's a very long pump that is very efficient on every stroke. It's also covered by our comprehensive Silca Shield Lifetime Warranty, so it's a pump that will definitely last your bike.

It has this high quality all-metal construction so you don't have to worry about plastic parts breaking or becoming brittle. Some of the downsides to the pump are the fact that it is very expensive and on par with other floor pumps. This Silca locking bumper is quite difficult to adjust, it takes a lot of force to pull it back and forth.

After all, it would have been nice to have a pressure gauge, because otherwise you really inflate the tires by touch, which can be really difficult and would give the frame pump 8.9 out of 10 points. It's an expensive frame pump, but it's definitely built to last and has a warranty to back it up.

How do I choose a bike pump?
