Now they are 500 grams each, we have four of them, so two kilos more weight, which we will attach in the bottom bracket area and also near the stem to test the sprung mass second weighted setup, we will need another set of wheels .

So for the first test we take a break and challenge. Now I'm going to start on the hill and come down at a pretty old speed, keeping the same speed every time on my game here and we have this little protocol as our goal, and we're going to be the brakes there, and I think everyone has to see how long it takes to stop, it could be an interesting experiment i think this one. (upbeat music) Right, so we come by, we are currently doing 15 mph and woohoo.

We braked. A little heavy at the front, but we managed it. She is a measure of herself and look what it was. I like it. (upbeat music) Time for our second test and this is a climbing challenge. So again with all three different setups, so we'll start where our log end was for our break test and we'll climb 100 meters until the boards are, I think you can see them.

And it made it really hard to maneuver the bike. So I think there might be something about experimenting with the amount of fluid. But it wasn't much fun for this test. (laughs) But we have some good numbers.

So I think now is the time to toss it back in the shed, crack some numbers, and see what we have. So we're back here in the shed and boy, did I crack a lot of numbers. So first let's take a look at bike weight.

Now my stock bike, no weights on it, as you saw it, 14 and a half kilos, if we buckle the weights, a little more than two kilos extra, so that was 16 and a half. Now with the water, that's the biggest increase is from 14.5kg, my bike has gone up to a whopping 18.06kg, so a really big difference in weight that I think will make a big difference when climbing, that's for sure.

So test one, that was our braking challenge. Now, interestingly, bike one, which is my production bike, managed to stop an 18-and-a-half foot. The bike that had a sprung weight was 22 feet of the wheels.

With the added weight there was a lot more stability. So the front wheel wasn't washing the rear wheel. It's more controlled and was able to keep it almost lower on the ground and get better on the brakes.

So pretty interesting, although I still think if you mess around with a weight you can probably find a bit of a sweet spot. Test two and that was our climbing challenge. Now my stock bike climbed our set distance on each triple in 7.7 seconds, bike number two OUR bounced this weight 8.2 seconds, i.e. about 0.5 slower.

And I think that would always be a if you had a heavier bike. Interestingly, bike three, so our weighted wheels were another 0.5 seconds slower.

So overall a full second slower over less than 10 seconds is a pretty big gap. And the reason for that is getting started with such a great rotation master, it was just so slow off the line and to get up to speed. There was just too much force in it to get it going and make the water rotate.

Once it got up to speed it was fine, but out of line, she was a bit of a dog, so third and finally our trail challenge e. Now we've written a very well-known piece of trail, one that I've written many times have. I thought it's about a minute long, it's actually a little shorter, more like 42-38 seconds down.

Bike too, so this is again a sprung weight with a weight around the stem and bottom bracket, that was 41 seconds. Now the interesting thing here, even though it's three seconds slower, the bike felt much more composed and controlled when braking over rougher sections. So actually it made a huge difference there.

I think playing around with the weight might really find a sweet spot in that, and I think that might be the most effective on our weighted wheels unsprung mass, 46 seconds, very slow. And the reason for this is not the fastest on this particular section of the route anyway, the feeling that so much water sl The forces whirling around in the sleepers have just made the bike unstable, especially in the air, and therefore still 46 seconds. So a total of eight seconds slower, which is an enormous time in such a short time.

Okay, so let's' summarize what we learned. Well, my stock bike, I'm very used to riding it very comfortably and it comes as no surprise that it comes up trumps every time. What was surprising is the sprung weight that adds the weights to the stem and bottom bracket, things like that.

I definitely think there is something to it. I think if you played around with the positioning and weight you could probably get some benefit from you've made your descents, I'm honest, both unsprung and sprung extra weight was felt. It's dragging more, you're only going up slowly, it's just harder because you're obviously carrying more weight.

But in defense the I definitely think the sprung weight has a lot of potential as obviously a lot of people have tested before, no matter where you're messing around with how much weight you're putting on, then when you have time to dig a little deeper with the suspension and To deal with tire pressure, I think you really could find an optimal setup.
