So we're out here in the beautiful Basque Country to visit Orbea and see them do it on a brand new trail bike, the Orbea Occam. (light techno music) (strong music) So how are you? get a bespoke bike? Well, Orbea has been offering this service for some of its models for a few years now, Shimano invited us to the Orbea factory in northern Spain, near Bilbao, let's see exactly how they differ from the raw ones Carbon wheels to the finished bike come custom bikes. (light techno music) Orbea's MyO program has been around on racing bikes and mountain bikes for a number of years, and this is the brand new Occam.

So what you do is go to the Orbea website, choose the bike model you want. There it is, there is the bra and the new Occam, and basically start getting involved and really customizing the bike. The great thing about this whole MyO process is that it's completely free.



It's the same price as the standard color wheel. So start with colors. You can have a glossy or a matte finish.

That looks pretty good. Well i guess i go for white. When you're done with colors it even goes into the components so you can put this bike together exactly how you want it.

I will choose Shimano XT. From here you can choose your wheels, your handlebars, your saddle. All sorts of things.

And even then, start choosing ergonomics. How high do you want the handlebars, how long do you want the stem. Pretty insane though the detail you can go into.

Once you're done, hit the finish button and your bike will then be ordered. It is custom painted and built, so let's see how that happens. (computerized interference) If I just walk through the factory and see this bike rack.

This is going to Austria. It's really cool to see how all these bikes are built. There are some racing bikes, mountain bikes, some secret things.

And that is the carbon paint shop. Look at the colors that happen there. It's like stepping into a spaceship Take a look at the first step on how to turn these MyO-Bikes into your own bike.

So this is where the MyO process begins. There's the full carbon Occam, which I think looks pretty cool on its own. And there she is.

This is the one I designed earlier. So Laura scanned it with a barcode, all the colors are there. This is my personal bike or the bike we are going to build.

And this is the first process of really masking the frame, getting it ready, putting pieces in places where you don't want the paint to go away. From the first room it then goes through some air nozzles, which are a kind of decontamination process. It removes anything on the frame that might get in the way of the paint.

Then it goes for its first coat, which is a primer. This is done as a base layer to literally prime the frame for the next layers to make sure the paints stick properly. There's also a nice base for the next few colors to really stand out. (strong music) Next, the frame goes in the oven to bake and cure the paint.

This happens after each layer is sprayed on. (strong music) And also back through the nozzles after the burn-in. This is also done before and after each of the layers of paint to make absolutely sure that there are no contaminants in the way of the paint.

Now the frame is ready for its first color. The frame is baked again and passed through the cleaning nozzles. This is where the masking takes place to prepare it for the next coat of paint.

This is where the magic really happens, the different layers of colors really make the frame design come alive. It's a surprisingly manual process, with each of the masking outlines being cut and placed by hand. And it gets even more complicated because each model has its own specific decals.

It's amazing what processing goes into each and every frame. Once again the frame goes through the jet sand for a second color. (Joy music) After the third baking it goes to the decals.

These are also made entirely by hand in a warm water bath and then put aside put. One by one placed on the frame and wiped with a squeegee to get rid of the bubbles underneath. Finally, the clear coat is sprayed on.

This happens to be the gloss varnish. Bake one last and off to the space age inspection room. The lights are particularly strong so that nothing is hidden on the frame.

I really like these tires, the back and the front are two different treads o they are made specifically for the back with more traction the front with stopping traction One cool thing to keep in mind with the shock absorbers is that you actually lock them When you're trying to go up a big hill or maintain more speed, the front shock absorber actually absorbs an amount that can actually take away some of your speed, so you can block that shock absorber when you're driving over terrain that isn't very bumpy this way you can climb a hill more efficiently or maintain more speed while cruising around town, and finally, for a $ 1,000 bike, you can expect to have disc brakes.
